Default Official EF Front Brake Thread

Okay guys, I've read through a many thread, but still have questions.
I wanted this thread just to be about the FRONT brake upgrades.
The rears are less complex & already have enough thread with easy instructions.

Please keep it on topic & only post proven facts, if unsure please phrase it as another question.

What options are there for "non-kit" brake setups?
Who has made it work?

Front options:

1) 90-91 civic EX knuckle
10.3" rotors and bigger caliper
Note: hard to find but direct bolt on

2) 90-91 Integra knuckle
10.3" rotor and bigger caliper
Notes or Questions:
a) What must be done to correct the suspension (toe, camber, caster)
b) is the rotor and caliper the same spec as 90-91 EX ?

3) dx/si knuckle
VW Corrado G60 11" 4X100 with center ring
any caliper stamped 16CL16VN
Note or Questions:
*Caliper will need to be milled down 3mm (1/8") off where the bracket mates with the knuckle.
Corrado G60 - offset (back of disc to inside of mounting surface) 34.1mm
thickness - 22.0mm
diameter - 280mm
center bore - 65.07mm

a) what is center ring, what size to get, where to get it?
b) what car comes with 16CL16VN calipers... what do I ask or at the parts store?

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3025/...138bce97_o.jpg

4) dx/si knuckle
11.1" 93-96 Prelude VTEC rotors re-drilled to 4x100
ITR calipers stamped 17CL15VN ... or... 91-94 Accord Wagon calipers
Note & Questions:
*Caliper will need to be milled down 3mm (1/8") off where the bracket mates with the knuckle

prelude vtec - offset (back of disc to inside of mounting surface) 41.00mm
thickness - 23.1mm
diameter - 282mm
center bore - 64.21mm

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3594/...13f24b43_o.jpg

5) dx/si knuckle
11.1" 93-96 Prelude VTEC rotors re-drilled to 4x100
2003 CL calipers stamped 17CL16VN
* The bracket must be milled at the back where the knuckle mounting tabs are
* The bracket should have a notch grinded at the backside to prevent it from hitting the knuckle.

I will update post as more data comes in
Thanks, Charlie Moua

Can I get more info on the EX brakes? I recently found one in the junkyard and was looking to do the 11'' swap, but if the EX hubs, calipers, and rotors are complete bolt on and less hassle... That seems to be the way to go for 10 inchers.

the ex brakes are a direct swap with no change in suspension geometry, the DAs are direct-ish fit, but the rotors from the DA are the same size as the ex the caliper pistons on the DAs are bigger and are direct fit on the ex spindles check this out

Good info in this thread . I would also like to note that when using 10.3in EX rotors use 88-91 ex rotors. Not 92+ ex rotors. They have a slightly larger hub so there rotors will not center perfectly.

from what i found, and i will confirm or deny within a week, the only thing that the da front knuckles mess with is the caster. they dont mess with camber or toe, but i believe they drop the knuckle about 1/4 to a 1/2 inch. since i have both my 89dx front assembly and the 90 ls just sitting there, i will measure everything i can and let yall know as soon as i get the info

i have this set-up in my shed...contemplating putting it on

Well guys...you'll be glad to hear that it isn't necessary to hunt down those scarce EX knuckles to upgrade to 10.2" brakes. This bolts onto the non-EX 88-91 Civic/CRX knuckles!

Want to know how it's done?

Read on below to discover the beauty of the Jonathan Mod/sarcasm

Parts list:

-'91 Civic EX Brake rotors...same as 92-95 Civic Sedan rotors ($14.99 each at Pep Boys; probably cheaper at AutoZone)

- Accord Wagon Brake Calipers (will be stamped 17CL15VN; ~$50 rebuilt at Pep Boys). These are the exact same calipers as the ITR, Legend, Prelude VTEC etc. Great stopping power!

- Accord Wagon, Prelude VTEC (etc) Brake Caliper mount stamped 25T (a 23T bracket exists, but I can't promise you it will work). This is what came stock on the Accord Wagon.

- 1/8" wheel spacer OR grind ~1/8th" (2.5-3mm) off of the caliper mounting bracket. If you are familiar with the 11" brake upgrade, this is the same modification necessary.

Now, the installation...

First, you need to place the wheel spacer (or washers if you're ghetto) between the hub and your new 10.2" brake rotor.

OR shave off the ~1/8" necessary from the caliper bracket

Next, Install your rotor, mount the caliper, load the pads....(you know how to do all this) and enjoy your upgraded brakes!!!

I tested these with my two pair of 15" wheels and they fit just fine. If any of you have 14" wheels, you may want to see if they'll clear. They may not.

So you end up with the same rotor surface area as the Integra/EX upgrade, but you're upgrading to ITR quality calipers, larger pads etc. Not too shabby!

The proof is in the pudding....

Note that in these pictures I've got a ~1/10" (2.5mm) spacer between the rotor and the hub. You can instead opt to shave this amount off of the caliper anchor bracket if you don't want to run a spacer

this thread is missing something very vital.

Stock Si brakes.
They work incredibly well if they are properly maintained with a good set of pads.

Great thread! Thank you for getting all this info in one place.

I've got a set of Si knuckles with new OEM hubs and Moog balljoints just sitting here, so I was wondering how best to upgrade to larger brakes while still keeping these Si knuckles.

@BLU CIVIC: This is my favourite option as well, pls update if and when you do get it on, I would love to see more examples of this running

Ok..so i went down to the wreckers and got some calipers off a 94 Acura Legend 4-door GS(23T brackets, single piston caliper). I decided to try using the brackets with some 04 Ap1 calipers(16cl16vn) only to find out they dont work(23t bracket is too wide and does not line up). Im assuming that i would have to use the bracket that comes with the s2k caliper and take 1/8mm of of that.

DA front brakes fit perfect. ONLY thing they mess with is CAMBER. NOT caster and NOT toe. The knuckle is about .25in longer than the Dx/Ex/Si/STD knuckles thus giving you a little more camber. About a degree more.

The rotor of the EX Civic and the DA Integra are the same. Sime diameter and center bore.

Guys, I have a stupid question here...

I have a 1990 HF that has front HF brakes, the 13/16 master cylinder, and rear Si disc brakes. My issue is, I have a lot of brake pedal travel and I know that going to the 15/16 MC should fix this. And before someone says try bleeding, the brakes have been fully bleed until clear fluid comes out about 5-6 times now.

What I want to know is will Si calipers fit on the HF spindle/knuckle? If not, what doesn't fit? Can something be machined because I have no problem shaving sh*t down to fit.

It's time to do brakes again, and I'd like to go to the Si stuff if possible. I know it's only a .4" difference, but that's a lot more swept area for clamping force.

I suggest getting a 4040 or 3040 proportioning valve and putting in DX/Si front brakes (DX & Si are the same)

When you run b16 sir front knuckle upgrade:

Complete bolt on if installed on an SI model ef.

But if you run the knuckles on a non SI model ef youll have to either completely change out tie rods or you'll have to shave down the outer tie rod about 1/2 inch to have more room for adjusting the toe. reason why is inner tie rod completely threads through and wont allow more toe adjustment. Great upgrade, great stopping power.

DA front knuckles add positive camber and are NOT the same as EX knuckles, suspension geometry is totally different.

Is it better to go with 94-01 DC non-ABS booster/MC or 90-91 DA booster/MC? Does it even make a difference?
