Default Neutral/Clutch Safety Switch Install on 88 Crx

I currently have an 88 CRX HF that doesnt have a neutral/clutch safety switch and I was wondering if someone has a write-up or pics of what I will need to put in a switch from an 89-91 crx into my car. The reason I want to do this is because I drag race the car and almost all tracks have a rule requiring that the car has a neutral safety switch, so I would like to put one into my car so I can easily pass tech inspection without any problems.

I searched and read in a couple other threads that you have to change to a 89-91 pedal assembly and use the switch, relay, and some harness but can anyone post pics of exactly what I need to be looking for and how I can install it? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the offer man, I just gotta figure out exactly what I need to convert it over.......as I read more and more about it, it looks like its gonna be a PITA taking off the pedal assembly so im trying to figure out what will be the easiest way to do it and what parts I need exactly.

Are you sure you really need one? Because I do not remember ever seeing older cars failing due to the lack of one.

I'm glad I have an 88 and do not have to mess with one.

I went at mine with a different approach, but I was also forced to because my car was an 88, and track required it. Somebody at the track was cool enough to give me a pressure switch, shape and size of a sharpie marker. I actually zip tied it to my clutch cable right under the clutch lever on the tranny, so when clutch is pressed in the button is pressed. I used it to inturrupt the ground on the starter... It was a 10 minute job in the pits, and car is still rockin it 3 years later, never has failed. gl

Yes I do need one......every rulebook for every local track that I have looked at has specifically said all cars racing MUST have a neutral/clutch safety switch.

Would it be possible for you to take pics of your setup for me? Do you have a cable tranny or hydro? I have a k20 swap in my crx so Im using the hasport adapter piece. Thanks for your idea & input BTW

why not just install a push button switch on the dash that interrupts the signal wire to the starter? button not pushed in, can't start the car. button pushed in, you can.

i dont have a picture but its a switch that when pushed is open so when the clutch pedal is in its natural position its pushing on the switch and thus open, btw it mounts on the front of the pedal assembaly then when you push the pedal the switch is released and the circuit closes. so all you need to do is mount it to the pedal assembly and then rig it up so when your not pushing the pedal some part attached to the pedal is pushing on it

Thank you guys for the input and ideas.......I know the 89-91 pedal assemblies have the sensor attached to the clutch pedal so im might swap it over to have a stock setup or try some of the ideas posted in here. Anybody got pics?

Have you looked under your dash to see if your pedal assembly has the threaded hole to accept the clutch switch? Maybe it has provisions for the switch, but no switch.

Hmmm I thought 88s were the only years that didnt come with one.....but I understand that they might not check for one, but I dont want to drive 2hrs to a track and be turned away for something little like that if they do decide to check.

well high comp motors start up REALLY easy... so if you were working on a high comp motor at the track and left the power on and you rotated the motor you could start it up and hurt some one...

I think its more for pit safety then anything else, as stated if someone is working on a car and they turn it on with the car in gear it can move forward and possibly crush or kill someone......

I have a related question. I'm nowhere as skilled as you guys.
How can I get to the wire connector on the clutch cutout switch?
I can barely reach the backend of the switch from under dash, but not enough room to pull the connector off.

Thanks for an answer to a basic question.
