How often should i change the oil on 97 accord SE 200,000 Miles?
I have a 1997 Honda Accord SE about to reach 200,000 miles. Lately i have been using atleast 120-150 miles per week atleast. Thats traveling from home to school. going from long beach CA to irvine CA. which is 30 miles each way a few times per week. I just had the timing belt changed 2 days ago and im wondering how often should i change the oil and filters and what not? i was thinking it was 3000 miles or every 3 months but because its got so many miles and a lot of miles used per week if i should be doing it even more often. hope someone can help me also if you know a good place to go in So Cal OC or Long Beach Area
thanks

If you want a piece of mind, do the general tune up:
cap and rotor, plug and wires, air filter, fuel filter
Also doing other fluids like coolant, brakes, clutch* and powersteering will benefit you as well.
as for oil, change every 3-4k on conventional oil, 4-6k miles on synthetic, dont go by months unless you barely drive it which isnt the case.
also, if its an AUTO, leave the tranny fluid alone but if its MT, change that out with honda/acura mtf.
if you want to increase the life of your drivetrain, invest in some magnetic drain plugs. Today i drained my friends tranny and found sand size pieces of metal

Im in norcal, so i cant give you any advice where to take your car. If youre capable of doing the work yourself, i would do that but with someone's guidance. This way you save so much more money and know you did the job right.
here are the drain plugs i was talking about.

Why not do it yourself? It's no fun plus I really wouldn’t want someone else touching my car... I use amsoil synthetic 10W-30, change it before you reach 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.

Haha tell that to BMW Buddy. Oil change interval on my 335i can be anywhere from 10K-22K miles or one year, whatever comes first. Depending on how you drive. Gotta love German Synthetic Castrol Oil.

I'm paying the same for regular synthetic so I chose this route 4 years ago and have had no problems so far.

Your car, not mine.
While 3k is probably too small of an estimate nowadays I wouldn't go past 5k for moderate driving.
I'm hoping you saw the Jeep's motor that went 60k miles without an oil change. It was completely toasted. And don't use the "blah blah cheap motor cheap car" argument. I'd LOVE to see your owner's manual stating you can go 22k miles without an oil change.

don't get me wrong amsoil is an awesome oil but i would never run any oil past 5k ... so what about the oil filter ... it comes along for the 15k-20k ride ... that must be very healthy lol

Per what I googled on the bimmerforums. They said this all came about when BMW introduced the lifetime maintenance crap on their cars. It jumped from like 5k intervals for fluids to like 10k.

More or less, that was their take on the situation.
I have a feeling the dealerships are betting on the oil holding up *okay* for that extended time period so they don't have to fork over the money to pay for it.
To be the end all for the situation you should send it in to Blackstone or whomever that company is and have your oil analyzed, I have a feeling though at 20k miles it's going to be **** poor quality.

Re: How often should i change the oil on 97 accord SE 200,000 Miles?
I'm glad some people are smart enough to realize this. My hats off to you sir(muffinman) for pointing people in the right direction.
We service some of the states (Texas) T.A.B.C vehicles at my work and they require that amsoil stuff. Granted it may be good oil (and with the amsoil filter) 15k on a single oil change is pushing it...especially under the severe service they put their vehicles in.
Can't honestly believe how anyone can think 25k, 1 year, or whatever is 'ok' service intervals on oil changes. That's like saying batteries and engine coolant lasts 5 years...it just doesn't happen.

honestly 5w-30 and 10w-30 dont make too much difference.. Just depends on the temperatures which you will be starting the car.. ie. is it cold enough to justify one or the other..
My advice would be, stick to whatever you been using all these years..
If using regular dino oil, about 4k
If you are using regular synth and a good filter, 6k is no problem
I personally use purolator pureone filters

i keep my oil filters OEM.
with oil since i live in a climate area, i stick to 10w-30 10w-40.
with my intervals i would change my oil every 5k

Re: How often should i change the oil on 97 accord SE 200,000 Miles?
im interested in what brand oil and filter are you using now? also how often have you been changing the oil? i work at big o tires. i do oil changes all day long, so when a car comes in thats gone hundreds or thousands of miles over the recommended miles from oil company itself, i get to see what that oil looks like first hand. So believe us when we say, 3k on regular oil/syth. blend and oil filter, 5k (up to 7.5k, but i dissagree,) with FULLY synthectic BUT i would recommend still changing filter at 3k if your going to go the full 5-7.5k cause they dont have a "synthetic" filter. lol. also make sure to check your oil level regulary at least once a week. correct tire pressure is also very important. one more thing i would strongly reccomend is jacking up the front of your car, support it on jack stands and shake down the front end of your car. what is mean is grap the left or right front tire on each side and shake it side to side and then grap the tire on the top and bottom and shake it up and down. this will check your tie rod ends, and wheel bearings.
