Icon2 02 Accord Transmission Help

This is regarding a 2002 Honda Accord EX Automatic

This problem occurs approximately 10% of the time. I'm not sure why and it seems to happen randomly. These are the steps taken:

The car is in park and turned on.
The brakes are pushed in to shift from Park to Reverse.
The shift button is stuck half way and the gear can not be changed.

It takes a lot of fidgeting to get the button to finally depress all the way. What could be the problem? I tried searching but did not find any answer. Thanks in advance!

There are a couple of things that could be causing this. First Next time this happens listen when you push on the brake pedal there should be a clicking coming from the center console by the shifter. If there is no clicking check to make sure the brake lights are working. If they are then, check the shifter interlock solenoid in the center console. It is located on the side of the shifter.

If you have no brake lights then it will be a brake light switch. My money is on a bad brake light switch.
