Icon2 Need help with a scab on my dog's ears

This is Roy

http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/4483/img2304z.jpg

He is a Chihuahua mixed with a Beagle. He is a indoor dog and my wife and I walk him out to bathroom 4 times a day. He gets bathed, brushed teeth, and nails clipped twice a week. I take him to the park two times a week to play soccer.

I recently noticed scabs growing inside his ear. On one ear he has a scab the size of a marble on the other is a scab size of a Skittle. Beyond that he has red dots on his inner ears. My question is, what can I use to heal his scabs? Can I use Neosporin or some topical medication? As well has any one ran into this illness in dogs and what usually causes it? I just recently noticed it yesterday and I assume it has been developing since tuesday (last time he was out running.) If all else fails then I will take him to the vet.

Here are a few not so good pictures but gets the point across:

Spring time's just around the corner so I'm taking a stab in the dark that it's flees...?

I wouldn't see why Neosporin would hurt your dog. Another good one that works well is simply applying tea tree oil to the scabs. I know it works GREAT for cuts that I get.

I'd keep an eye on him and see if he's scratching at these fresh scabs.

...and I'm not a vet by any means, so take what I said for what it's worth

I would recommend taking your dog to the vet, to determine if there is an underlying illness and/or infection, that is causing those bumps and scabs in the ears.

You can try washing his ears first with an ear cleanser (pictured below), to see if the conditions improve; but, I believe the first and best step would be to take him to see the veterinarian first.

The vet also recommended cleaning my dogs' ears every two weeks, to prevent the buildup of bacteria and any sort of an infection, as part of their hygiene.

Good luck.

with as many dogs i have had in my life, they would get a bad itch infection in the ear. is your dog scratching its ears alot? the scabs are from your dog scratching it ears with their nails. the red dots have me stumped. i dont remember any of my dogs having that. that might be a sign of an infection.

good luck though

Sounds like ear mites.Scabs in a dogs ear are most likely from him scratching his ears.Put your little finger in a peice of toilet paper and stick it in his ear as far as you can.If it comes out dark brown or black,it is ear mites.Sometimes it will be so bad you can hear it when you rub their ears.
Red dots in the ears can be from chiggers or fleas,i know of no dog illness that has red spots in the ears.

my dog had a problem with her ears a few months back. constantly scratching, oozing and the smelled bad. the vet gave me some drops that cleared it up in a week.

Take him to the vet and they will use a scope to check his ears. More than likely you will walk away with some Mitaclear which is a miticide used to kill ear mites. The inital treatment will probably be 3-4 drops in each ear everyday for 1 week (maybe 2 depending on how bad they are). Our amstaff gets them frequently. After the inital week of treatment we try to treat her for them at least once a week to prevent another infestation. If we forget and skip a week or two she usually gets them again. My fiance also uses a q-tip to clean the parts of the inner ear he can see to keep them free of the black/brown stuff (which is excrement from the mites).

He does scratch his ears but can they really leave a scab the size of a skittle?

Oh I'm sorry, yes you are correct, they are red dots and NOT spots. He has a couple of red dots on each ear. Also I performed the checking his ear with a toilet paper and I used my pinky finger and I didn't get any blotches or stains on the paper. I saw a speck of a brown particle but nothing what you described. I did proceed to twist the toilet paper into a soft q-tip and used it to swirl it around but to my discovery of nothing.

He doesn't wine when he scratches his ears, just continues to chew on his raw hide or soccer ball

Also I forgot to mention, when I try to pet my dog on the head he doesn't let me and dodges my good gestures

I'll set up an appointment for tomorrow then. How much do vet offices charge? How do I know when I'am being ripped off? I did a few hours of research and their isn't many vet hopsitals with good reputation so I feel unease taking my dog to a doctor who just their to pay off his Mercedes.

my family is in the military and our base has a vet. super cheap.
you got anything like that where you live? if not, ask some friends that have pets and see where they take em.

So he doges you? so when you go to pet him he basically just moves his head away from your hand or does he just walk away?
does he have his ears down when he does this?

Vet offices often have bad reputations because there are a lot of emotions involved in pet care, and customers are easily upset in those situations. Owners often wait too long to take an animal to the vet causing more expensive problems and more potentially fatal situations for the animal. Make sure you schedule your dog at a non-emergency clinic, they cost less. Animal care is expensive, true veterinarians have as much formal medical education as a regular MD, so don't expect to walk out of there with a $40 invoice. I would guess Exam $60 + antibiotics + ear treatment + $60 check up in a week = ~$200 neighborhood.

My dog had his ears down when I wanted to pet him. This started on tuesday but today he doesn't mind he enjoys it.

I was going to walk into the vet with $500, so I guess I'm cool.

Where are you located? If you're in the San Diego area, I have a few recommendations.

Looking for an honest, knowledgeable and compassionate vet is difficult, in my opinion. It took a lot of trial and error (not to mention, time and money) for me to find a vet whom fit that criteria, and was looking out for the best interest of my pets and not their pocketbook.

If your dog's situation isn't anything too serious, you should expect the visit to be in the $200 range, as someone stated earlier.
