I say put some insulation n them, and a stack of these would sell like gangbusters in LA. For $300 a month, I would do it, .

I don't know about the $300 a month deal(for 300 it better include utilities), but I would rock it. |

looks worst then trailer homes to me
The future i believe is going to be prefab green modern houses. Built in solar panels for electricity, runners to use rainwater, etc etc. Fairly cheap, semi stylish, easy to construct and easy to move around.

have fun in the summer.
you will fry during the day, and then roast at night while the metal cools down after a full day of sun.

This is actually something I've been seeing more and more about. I don't think I could deal with how narrow one of those things is but this one is pretty cool: http://www.treehugger.com/file...s.php

haha yea but you can get prefabs with walls instead of glass. that was just for reference. But they're perfect for someone who isn't looking for a huge house. buy a plot of land, buy a prefab house, drop it on, and you have quite the dainty little house.
a little imagination and you could go a long way. its actually a very old technique to use blocks and build a house. easy cheap construction. but considering that it was mainly only used to make houses for show it never really struck. there was some kind of show where designers actually built prefabs with "green" intentions for a showcase. But with the previous housing boom it was hard to get a company to build many prefabs because it was easier just to go out and buy one. Ill be the first to admit that some are still quite pricey depending on materials, location, and if you have any knowledge on how to put a house together. its not exactly like legos, you gotta have a place for your crap to go too haha. But with better technology out there now, and better materials to work with, i think this is going to work quite well. Theres a huge niche market out here especially in the NW corner for "green" homes. heres a pic of a good one. You can see they're very little, because well they are meant to be cheap and transportable, and you can lug around a 2 story house. and here you can see it wouldn't be too hard to stack them and build a complete modern looking house. My grandfather has some nice land in the mountains of NC, and I'd love to put some cheap housing up there to use as a vacation home for the family.

Depending on materials and such they can range from 50k for a basic one with no furnishings delivered to you, and up to a few million bucks. Google around. there are alot of reputable companies that build prefabs. I've actually seen a prefab up close and they are great for replacement summer cottages, vacation homes, or buy a small one and drop it in a backyard and ta-da.

Haha true true
Ive only been intrested in it because i see a great business proposition in it. I visited this small production plant called solar sun last week which is making solar panels that you can just roll out on your roof and plug in instead of the panels and metal frames. Anyone in he NW will know that the rich hippies up here throw money away just to be "green" That and with the housing crush i think people will start realizing that just because they are single and can afford a 2 story house with 4 bedrooms and 2.5 baths, that maybe they should dive in. Its a great alternative to, well housing really. Like i said before, you could buy a small one and chuck it in you backyard and have a guest house or something too! beats walking in on you sister in law in YOUR shower. |

get deployed to Kyrgyzstan and that's what you live in for 6 months. They build the dorms out of stacks and stacks of these. Throw some siding and paneling on them and BAM, instant dormitory complex.
