Default how does neosporin prevent scars?

fell off my bike last week and lacerated my chin, needed 20 stitches

the dr gave me antibiotic cream i've been wiping it on the wound for almost a week now, my coworkers tell me i should use neosporin because it prevents scarring, if neosporin is jsut an antibiotic cream wouldnt the dr provided stuff do the same thing?

Might be a better idea to consult your physician and let him tell you which is better over asking Honda-Tech. After all, he would be the one that would know what medicine he prescribed and it's advatanges over any over the counter products.

Actually, the antibiotic ointment is used to prevent infection. To prevent scarring, especially on the face, your MD should've told you to cover the laceration with sunscreen and prevent sun overexposure, especially during the healing phase.

I work in the ER as a RN and these are the instructions we tell our patients with face lacs that required sutures.

hmm...interesting.

I thought exposure to the sun helped reduce the redness on the scar and it will eventually help fade away Click the image to open in full size.

that's actually what they told me about the sunscreen. how fresh virgin skin is extra sensitive to UV and will darken pretty quickly in the sun. my friend was the one that mentioned neosporin, and since i always thought it was just an antibiotic, my question was is the antibiotics given to me comparable to neosporin?

...and as said before, nobody here has any idea what the doctor gave you. Get off Honda-tech and call your doctor!

Most likely it's the same. Any triple antibiotic ointment for superficial injuries would do the trick.

Compare the active ingrediant for both the Rx cream and Neosporin and let us know what they are.

Any laceration requiring 20 stitches is going to scar; no way around that.

Keeps the bacteria out...or so I have been told.

Also...keeping a wound moist prevents future scarring.
