Default 1996 Honda Accord Speed Sensor Part and Replacement?

Hello, I have a 1996 Honda Accord LX - 4 cylinder. The engine light went on and I can drive fine, but the speedometer doesn't function and the mileage does not put on miles. So I have driven about 250 miles so far and only put on .7 miles. I believe the problem is the speed sensor, I had it checked out at a car shop and they said this is 95% the problem. They want to charge me $200 for replacing the part and labor ($125 for the part, $75ish for the labor). I tried looking up the part online and it looks to me like it doesn't cost nearly as much: http://www.drautoparts.com/ite...38337

I am wondering what you guys would recommend I do for getting this part and replacing it.. Does $200 sound reasonable to fix this problem?

Thanks.

How difficult is it to replace it? I don't really have that much knowledge about cars unfortunately. But thanks for your advice so far!

Neither did I haha.

It's just 2 bolts that hold it in. If you move the intake arm and look straight down on the backside of the transmission (so passenger side) you should see a small triangular shaped thing with 2 or 3 wires coming from it. Just take that one out, and put the new one in

Thanks a lot, I think I should be able to handle this haha.. I guess buying this part from a honda manufacturer is like $125-150, hopefully these ebay ones aren't too mediocre.

Yeah I bought mine new from Honda (turns out wasn't even the problem for me) and swapped it - took me maybe an hour because I had to figure out where the damn thing was.

If you google VSS replacement you should come up with a few car threads with pics

Roughly it's there, if you look straight down on top of the transmission under the intake, behind the dizzy. You should see it

Yeah you have to remove the intake. Just unscrew it at the throttle body, unscrew the airbox, and anything that is connected. With that out its still hard to see, but its there. Feel for where the transmission meets the motor. Its on the transmission mounted straight up and down. Towards the back of the engine. Mine was filthy dirty and i couldnt find it because it was caked in black grease and dirt.

Use a flashlight...even in the daylight. If you have large hands it makes it even harder to remove. I got giant paws.

I had the same problem with my 95 accord. The vss did not solve the problem. Our accords have a problem with the speedo. Its in the back of it. I took it out (cluster) and took to a speedo shop in Tacoma WA. They fixed it for I think it was $135 no problems since.

My 1996 Honda Accord Ex was having the same problem. While driving on the freeway the speed meter just dropped to 0 and it stays there for a few minutes then shot right back up. After a week the engine light goes on. I had a friend uses his scanner to found the speed sensor was the the problem. I purchased a VSS off Ebay and installed within 30 minutes the problem solved. You will need some special long connected bendable tools to get to the little speedo. It located straight down front of throttle body. Make sure you take out the intake holes.

Tools you'll need is a #10 socket. Some extension that can bend on the tip or else you wont be able to get to the inner bolt.

The easy fix cost me $15.00. I was quoted for $160 at the local shop.

Hope this helps.

easy fix the second bolt is a pain to get to though. I had the same problem when I first got my accord.I though it was my cluster after I spent 100 bucks on it just to find out it was the problem.

Good luck finding with the intake piping on. Just remove the intake tube, it should be towards the rear of the transmission. Quite easy to see once its uncluttered above.

Bought a sensor. Had it installed. It didn't work. Now what? Any other ideas on why the speedometer is failing? It worked intermittently and now it isn't moving at all. After buying a negative cable and hooking that up too. This car has been a thorn in my side.

question my car has recently been having trouble with the speedometer randomly fluttering either a little higher or a little lower then normal example, im driving at 40mph and it it flutter to 50 or 30 sometimes it will completely go down to 0! and go back to normal almost feels like my engine dies a little then turns back on autozone said it could be the fuel filter cause at random when i come to a stop it WILL die....

could it be the VSS or the fuel filter? or something else?

It is working intermittently again. But mostly it doesn't. I hate to throw more money at it. I'd like to get the A/C fixed too, but not sure where to start. Speedometer first.
