Whats the deal with blurring out peoples faces on tv/newspaper

What makes it allowable for tv to show some peoples faces and not others?? I see famous people/criminals (who obviously don't want their faces shown) not blurred out and than I see people randomly caught on films with their faces blurred and some not.

Is it allowable to show someone's face if they are a criminal/famous and if it's a random guy you have to get consent or something??

no clue. i was down in west hollywood at one of the shopping centers, and there was a sign at each entrance saying they were filming a show and by entering, you consented to being on film and your voice used, etc etc.

I don't know...but famous people are that....famous. This means they're in the public eye and can have **** written about them and pictures shown of them. If you're just a regular dude, you have certain rights to privacy. Although I don't know the exact laws that deal with this stuff...

I think that they have to have your consent to show your face on TV unless you're just a passerby or something.

Same goes for products, ever notice how they blur out product names on Real World and other reality shows? It's because they don't have permission to use the names on their show.

I think if they are using you to make a profit..like lets say the show Cops, then they need your consent.

apparently you didnt notice that half of the time on those cop video shows, the suspects face is blurred out.

Apparently, you are watching a different "Cops" show than me because that is not true at all. Also, have you seen the show "To catch a predator"?? Who the hell would consent to that! So, you really think anyone on the show "To Catch a Predator" would consent to it? Hell no, that **** would ruin your life.

I see maybe some crack head consenting to letting the show Cops use their face for money because they're thinking " Dayum hundread dollas to be on da tv"!!

Also, there is no way Britney Spears would let the pictures/videos of her be published without her faced blurred even if she got money. The publishers/news are definately making money off her.

Access Hollywood makes BANK off of showing photos and video of people who don't want to be shown.

...yet there are random passersby getting their faces blurred out left and right...

I always thought that they blurred out products because the manufacturers refused to pay The Real World $$$$ for the product placement... I think this is the more likely answer here.

I think so too, I remember watching a basketball game (I think college) where the players had to have tape over the Energy drinks to cover up the name. Maybe, a deal fell through and they had to quickly cover up the product because they weren't getting their money. I don't see how a company would require that the team cover up the name, that is nothing less than free advertisement.

It's crazy how much direct/indirect advertising, I was watching Gladiator and they had one of the contestants while getting an interview hold a drink perfectly with the label facing the camera and take a drink in the middle of it... god that was annoying!

That's a pretty dumb explanation...

First off "To Catch a Predator" is not the news.

So you are saying that news is exempt from blurring peoples faces? I'm sure everyone has seen someone on the news with a blurred face.

Also, explain the difference between "Craziest police chases" and Cops, I see none.

I meant its on the news station. same as like when they expose a bad business owner or some scammer and they go knocking on their door. slightly different than tv shows that are made from footage obtained from police video cameras.

edit: Cops and cop related shows need a release form just like any other show, while shows like catch a predator do not since they are aired on "news" channels.

In the early years, we used to see lots of people with blurry dots on their faces. Now we rarely see that. Why were their faces blurred but others were not? And why do we not see blurred faces anymore?

Those who appear on the show must sign a photo release, allowing Langley Productions to use their face on their shows. In the first years of production, many people weren't familiar with the show and some refused to sign the release. The show just blurred out their face and included them in the story. But the process of blurring is expensive and time consuming. Also, over the years, more and more people saw being on COPS as their chance at their "15 minutes of fame" so were more inclined to sign. Today, the show tries to not blur faces if at all possible which seems to be the preference of the viewers.

In all cases?? If so, explain to me the doctor or the teacher who gets caught on "To Catch a Predator" and their face is shown. Who would consent to that? I would kill myself if I was exposed in that way(1 person did). I really doubt they were given the option.

no you don't. you think on reality tv shows, everyone in the general public signs a consent forms? There are usually signs posted up at entrances to certain areas that say filming is going on and by entering, you consent to your picture, voice, etc., being shown. If you don't agree with those terms posted, you don't enter. I was in a mall in West Hollywood last week, and this was posted at each entrance.
