the only complete longblock you can buy which won't require any mods to make work is the exact one that's already in there. a z6 will require rewiring of the dizzy (since the y8 dizzy won't bolt to head properly), and it lacks both a ckf and knock sensor.

if i were you, i'd consider doing what i did. when i got my 96 the y8 already had a hole punched through the front of it. so i converted to obd1 and dropped in a z6.

$300 for the engine, $100 for ecu, $40 for jumper harness, $110 for new clutch and flywheel resurface, and $75 for cap, rotor button, plugs, wires, oil and filter. so a little over $600 is what it cost me.

I just did this in my 96 ex... used a d16y7 block and everything was identical, and it runs perfect.

He's not replacing the head etc, just the block.
Any "D" series block will work.

Y7 will be the easiest. It will have the CKF sensor already. The only thing it needs is the knock sensor swapped over.

i'm aware of that, that's why i said longblock.

yes any d-series will work, but he said without having to do any mods to it.

y7 is of course non-vtec so with the stock y8 ecu he will be throwing vtec related codes.

Uh, no. As long as he swaps overs the knock sensor it's golden. All the VTEC controls will be with the head, not the block. He's asking for the BLOCK.
