Default 94 Accord EX VSS (speed sensor) questions: bolt size, where to buy?

Is the VSS held on by 2 or 3 bolts? My Haynes manual says there are 3 6MM bolts but I only see two bolts, but there are 3 phillips head screws that are visible. Do I remove the 2 bolts or the 3 screws? If it's the 2 bolts, can someone tell me what size they are?

Also, is there a preferred place to buy the VSS? I saw one for sale on Amazon. I can't seem to find one on Majestic Honda.

Thanks!

Should be 2 bolts, unsure on size but I'd wager somewhere between 10mm and 14mm as that's practically every other bolt in the engine compartment.

As to purchasing wherever. I got one OEM new from my local Honda dealer.

May I ask how much it cost you? My dealer wants $140. Online, the VSS seems to sell for ~$50.

If someone else knows the exact bolt size, I'd greatly appreciate that information.

Another question: the manual mentions there is a very small part--the drive link--that is between the VSS and the transmission. Does this drive link tend to want to come out with the VSS or stay within the transmission?

Lol you seem concerned about the bolt size, it's a simple change of a ratchet end pieces lol.

Dealership was ~ $100. You can get them on ebay for cheaper.

And yes there's a small rectangular piece that fits into a hole in the tranny and a hole in the VSS.

When you buy it new from the dealership it'll come with a new one, just grease it up a bit and put it back in.

The VSS is in a very difficult to reach place. It would be easier to start with the right sized socket.

Does the drive link come out when the VSS is unbolted? Does it need to be replaced with the VSS?

Call me cheap but with this 14 year old car, I'm trying to spend as little as possible because I know I'm only going to have it a few more, hence the reluctance to purchase the $140 dealer part.

Take off the air intake and it shouldn't be that difficult, I changed my VSS without even looking up how to. I just unbolted the thing.

And the little pinion - what you're calling the "drive link" will come out with the vss, doesn't need to be replaced though. But make sure you don't lose it.

If you're that concerned with cost then just buy an eBay replacement.

I am having the hardest time finding this thing (the VSS) on my 94 Accord LX sedan. I understand that I need to remove the air intake...is that the long plastic pipe that connects to the air cleaning/filter box? Any chance you could take a picture when you are changing it out? I need to change my VSS also, but I want to test mine first before I buy the part. I guess I'm not entirely sure which part is referred to as the "air intake" vs. the plenum etc. Any help is greatly appreciated. I really want to learn this stuff.

While standing on the passenger side of your car, take a flashlight and shine it right below where the thermostat housing is. You'll see the VSS.

A couple of good links:

I'm not going to be able to capture the removal and installation process for you because of the location.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tip...I was able to find it that way. Now that I have found it, I am wondering how in the world I'm going to get down there with the socket and unbolt it. Which part/s should I remove to get to it? I keep hearing the "intake" needs to come off first, but I am not sure what is being referred to here. Is it the long, black, plastic tube that is about 3" in diameter that runs from the air cleaning box? Or is it the solid metal piece (plenum)? I'm just trying to figure out the quickest and easiest way to get in there. Seems there are a lot of things connected to the plenum and that it would take me all day to get that off correctly. Any tips helping me to understand this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

lol Tim, intake = intake so the plastic tub you're seeing.

It's just a rubber tube, there's 2 bolts holding the air box on the front and a spring holding it to the throttle body

Thanks! So once I move that out of the way I should be able to reach down and get to this speed sensor pretty easily then, right?

Yep. Just unplug the rubber wires to it and pull it out. It's still a reach but much more easily done. I used I believe a 6" extension on my ratchet which went under the distributer and wire bundles but cleared everything else down there.

Part is successfully installed. It took about an hour but could be done in as little as fifteen minutes. You will need:

10mm socket
6" socket extension
9" socket extension
socket flex adapter

The first 10mm bolt is easy to reach once the air intake is moved out of the way (I didn't remove the intake, just loosened it). The second bolt, the one closest to the front of the car, is much harder to reach. The two extensions and the flexible socket adapter are necessary to remove the bolt. I reached down with my left hand and guided the socket, which is inserted between the distributor and the thermostat housing.

Installation of the VSS is easy but you do need to ensure the drive link pinion doesn't fall out. My ebay part seems to work just fine.

Good luck!

Thanks to all on this chain. I was able to follow your directions and replace the VSS sensor on a 1990 Accord. By removing both the air intake and metal bracket with three bolts directly above the V.S.S sensor, it wasn't necessary to use a flexible socket adapter and both bolts came out easily. I would find it hard to complete this job in less than an hour, but with the guidance within the email chain, it isn't as hard as it looks. I obtained three estimates, all over $300 for labor and part. Worth the hour and $25 part fee to do the work yourself. Ebay is the way to go - $25 part works just fine and far less than the $160 list price from the dealer.
