Default Help me choose a bike

So I'm in the market for a new(er) bike. I am looking into the bikes and as soon as I think I have my mind made up, I fall in love with a different machine. I know this is Honda-Tech, but please be open minded and help me choose the superior bike.

EDIT: Hit the enter key before added all the bikes to chose from.

R1
R6
CBR 1000
CBR 600

Have you ever ridden one of these machines? Neither is "superior" to the other. The 600s are all very similar, as are the 1000s. I'd suggest sit on as many as you can, research a bunch, test ride, ect.

What is your riding style?

Agree with you a 100%. I am not looking to get a bike and set lap records. Just wanted to hear some opinions.. I will use the bike to commute to school/work.

my honest opinion, and correct me if i'm wrong, is based on the fact that you're very new to the sport. since you are new, and face some growing pains, my suggestion is that you get something that's CHEAP, kinda SLOW, and isn't a ***** out sportbike. the 1000 is a terrible choice. the 600's you mentioned also suck because they're shitty for commuting.

basically you have to ask yourself WHY you want the bikes you mentioned. to show off and get jocked by the people who don't know **** about MC's? or to become a good rider/enjoy mc's for yourself?

the most bike i think is proper for a new rider is probably an f4i or a sv650. both are kick-*** bikes, that are alot of fun, but aren't 100% terrible for new riders. still, the f4i does 10.7 in the 1/4, the sv650 makes a lot of torque. both are capable of becoming very fast full on racebikes--if anything they've got too much power, but they're at least comfortable and cheap to repair.

To be honest, I'm really surprised with how everyone in here is concerned about my safety. I love the looks of a f4i and yes, it is a cheaper bike to own. I know that I should start up with a lesser bike and learn to ride properly, but I can't justify spending 4k for an 02 f4i when i can get an 06 600 cbr/gsxr for the same money. (i know a guy in repo)

you should be able to find a f4i for 3k or less.

it's concern for your safety, but it's also the PR beating sportbike riders take, by constantly doing stupid **** on brand new bikes. kills us on insurance, gets us pulled over for nothing, and makes everyone think we're anti-social sociopath retards.

if you can get a 06 600rr for 4k, get one. (and sell them all day for 5.5k on CL)--but a solid SV, F4i, or 99-02 zx6r should run you closer to $3k or less. that $1000 you save gets you all of the gear you need to putt around.

For commuting I would hate to ride an r6. I am a tall rider, so base my opinions on that, but I was very uncomfortable on that bike. Another /26 member said it best about the r6, something like "felt like a gorilla trying to fu*k a bowling ball"

I've only got a few miles on an '04 600rr, and the seating position was much better than the r6, but I don't really have the seat time to properly judge.

For commuting, a race-replica is really not practical. They look cool, but just are uncomfortable as hell with low clip-ons, high seat, and high rear sets (and the 600s are dead under 7k RPM). Open class bikes are nice because they have the torque you would want for commuting, but they will bite you in the *** faster than you can react. The bikes mentioned above would be good commuters (SV especially).

Look for something with higher clip-ons/ actual handle bars, or consider investing in some handle bar risers and adjustable rearsets if you decide to get an "R" bike.

OP, get a "standard" style bike. If all you're doing is commuting, then a 80s (or even 70s) Japanese bike should be more than adequate. My brother picked up a 1982 Yamaha Seca 750 in mint condition with less than 2000 miles on it for $1k. 80hp, 50mpg, a lot more comfortable around town in terms of power delivery and riding position than a sport bike.

Thanks for the input guys. I was coming home from school today and saw an 07 600RR. Fell in love with the bike all over. And no, I don't see myself sporting a 1980 yamaha.. Do explain "higher clip-ons/ actual handle bars, or consider investing in some handle bar risers and adjustable rearsets if you decide to get an "R" bike."

I commute year round on my 2007 600rr... I also have over 40,000 miles on a motorcycle, and nearly 20,000 on a bike with more than 100hp (between my old TL1000r and the 600rr). I am not justifying a 600 supersport for commuting (or any activity really) for a novice rider, just stating that with experience it can be worked up to.

Honestly, for a relatively new rider that is looking to commute I can't think of a better bike than a Ninja 500r. It is easy to ride, fast enough to enjoy, and great on fuel. I used to average close to 50mpg on my ex500 (an older version of the Ninja 500r), and on one tank got 55mpg. My $200 bike started up every morning and never gave me any headaches. Start off small, and work up to something big.

Nobody starts at the top, and if they do they have nowhere to go but down.

eh

in light of that get whatever bike you want. imo, your friends probably aren't going to be impressed with a f4i either.

also, some anecdotal evidence from my own life:
i just got a 05 750. it probably makes 115 whp or so. it's more like a 600 than it is a liter bike. this bike [freak]ing scares me. WOT throttle is insane on this thing. the motor makes enough tq throughout the powerband that it's hard to be smooth on the throttle. the rear wheel likes to spin up at corner exit, even at my relatively slow pace. the front wheel is up in the air on a whim, and the brakes (thanks to my bangin brake pads, vesrah's rule) literally suck my eyeballs out of their sockets. i've been riding 600's for 2 years. done 8 trackdays. i've destroyed knee pucks at pahrump, done 140 down the back straight at BW, hit the wheelie bump at streets, i've done 110 up AFH, i've watched people eat it in front of me at GMR, and i've saved a highside or two at idyllwild. yeah, i'm not john f'n hopkins--but i've dedicated a lot of time and energy into this sport, and this bike SCARES me.
