Looking at 6th Gen Accords, of course I have questions.
What's up everybody,
I just recently started to look at some newer cars, and on the list is the Accord, from 1998 through 2001, I'd most likely pick up a 2000-2001... More specifically I'm looking at the 4 Cylinder coupes, with the 5 speed trans. My biggest concern is highway driving as I do 120 kilometers a day on the highway.
Question 1 - Cabin noise, is it loud, quiet or moderate with the 4 cylinder motor? I'd just like to hear what you guys think about the quietness of the interior.
Question 2 - Cruising on the highway at around 65-75 Mph, where would I expect my RPM's to stay? Right now I drive a 92 VW Golf, the Accord would be replacing that as my second car, anyways, the Golf ranges from 3200 to 3600 RPM's doing 65-75, I hope the Accord is not like this because it makes highway driving a noisy affair.
That about all I can think of now, if you have anything that I must know about the cars, please do tell me, as all information is welcomed...

I've got a 99 4cyl 5 spd
80 mph is 3k rpms, 65 is maybe 2k. pretty low. When mine was stock, it was pretty quiet. you could hear tire and wind noise with the radio off. I get 32mpg highway at 80 mph, with 230k miles on the car. great car, you'll love it

Yep, I also have a '99 4cyl 5 speed, those RPM estimates are close to what I see.
Just keep in mind that besides the automatic transmission, the speedometers are also crap in these cars. They are not adjustable and most likely they are up to 5% off - kind of important to know when you are driving at 75 mph. Not a big deal once you know how far you are off, but just keep this in mind when you are shopping.
On the interstates in the US there are green mile markers. The way to test your speedometer is to put your car on cruise control and with a stop watch, time the amount of time it takes to go, say, five or ten miles (with minimal lane changes and of course no variation in the speed). Convert to miles per hour*, compare that with what your speedometer was set at. Do this at different speeds of course. When I am going 75 mph, my speedometer reads 79 to 80. When I am going 70, my speedometer reads 74, etc. Again, this isn't a big deal if you know about it.
And as far as the comment to avoid automatic transmissions - easier said than done, something like 90% of the Accords sold at that time were automatics. If you do see an automatic at a good price, keep in mind that you can have a mechanic do an automatic to manual conversion for $1,500 or so (labor included) for the 4-cylinder engines. I don't think it can be done for V6's?
And as far as road noise goes, with the windows shut it's quiet. With windows open it's loud.

As for automatics, I'd stay away from them anyways, I'm looking for a standard car, and there are quite a few of them on the Toronto market, Coupe and 4 door.

I love my 4 cylinder 5spd '00 ex coupe. The 01-02 do have the neater front end though. Just know that you need a timing belt and water pump around 115k (pretty sure thats honda's spec). Clutch will be needed around there too.
The ex coupe comes with rear disks, leather, etc. standard. The lx I do not think does.

Man what a joke used car dealerships are...
Car number one: 2000 Silver coupe. 5 speed, 140, 000 kilometers... Asking $8500... The car had dents and scratches across 50% of the panels and the doors wouldn't line up properly when shut, half the car was repainted because of a "big long scratch" and the front was covered with stone chips the size of pennies... What a joke, I just thanked him for wasting my time and not posting the REAL condition of the car in the ad...
Car #2: 2001 Silver Coupe, 5 spd, asking $5900 with 170 000 kilometers... I knew something was up with the car because of the price, but thought I'd have a look anyways... Car looked pretty good, had normal wear, like minor stone chips and such, then I open the door, the inside of the door is red... What a surprise, the car has been repainted...Both doors, the underside of the trunk and the engine bay were all a nice shiny red... Right then and there I shut the doors and left, didn't even talk to a salesmen...
In no way did I expect to find the perfect car on my first day looking, but what a disgrace these used car dealerships are... selling cars in this condition, claiming the car is "spotless"... Rediculous...
At least I have a nice new forum I can vent on

that sux kinda reminds me of the dealerships around here... basterds...
I have a couple friends around here that have salvaged titled cars and they run great but I guess it all depends on who rebuilt it...

i have a ulev bottom end with an h series head. love my car but i wish there was more i could do to it with damaging the motor....80 miles a day.. but it runs like a champ

What you are finding is exactly what I found out when I was looking for a used Accord back in '98. People ask crazy prices for used Accords - I was seeing one and two year old Accords with prices higher than what I could get a new Accord. So I bought a new Accord.
Consider picking up a new Accord if you can swing the extra cash. You should be able to pick one up (LX) for around $18,500 or so, plus tax title license etc. You'll get the color you want, the transmission you want, you'll have the full warranty, you'll know the maintenance history and you'll know how it was driven. It's possible that you could find an '07 at a slightly more discounted price, but I doubt it.

My buddies VeeDub is def louder stock.

the engine at cruisin sped is quiet as hell, even with the muffler off (i was getting it cleaned up from overspray and crap)
at around 65 RPM's are 2500, and ull do an easy 80 at 3K
this is for the automatic though

bump...ive got a 86 gti...saying that its loud at highway speeds is an understatement lol
as for accords go, they seem to be a nice quiet car imo

yeah when buying a car from a dealership i would ask them for a carfax report to see fi the car had been in some accident or something looks like those cars got banged up .. at least the red/white one. Suspect. Keep looking bro... you'll find something
