My 02 Civic is Overheating
I have a 02' 1.7 SOHC civic. Im having a problem with it getting hot. But only when it idles. When it isnt idling the temp gauge moves back to where it should be. The fans do work. anyone have any suggestions on how to fix my problem?

9 times out of 10 its a head gasket. you can try replacing the thermostat and what not, but if the car is pushing coolant into the reservoir, the headgasket is likely blown. It seems to be a horridly common thing with the these cars.

But if it's only doing it when idling, I'm not sure the headgasket is the cause.
OP Drain some coolant out of your radiator and also check your oil... if you have oil in your coolant or coolant in your oil then it is definitely likely your headgasket is to blame.

Re: (thinknology)
Sounds like a problem with the sensors for the fan or something to me. I sell parts for Volvos and Saabs and a common problem with them over heating at idle and slow speeds is the sensors for the fans to tell them what temp to come on. It also could be a bad fan relay and fans are working intermittently.
And the reason it cools back off while driving is because your pushing air through the radiator and cooling it down but just sitting there and it over heats makes me think its something to do with the fans but really can be plenty of things but the ones I said is the cheaper and easier to check ones. Good Luck!

^ That's another thing with the whole "idle" issue.
OP Is it only cool down when your moving or does it cool down when your sitting still and revving?

Theres no air running through the radiator.... idling is when the least cooling is going on. The car sits and heat soaks under the hood, and the fans have no where near the air movement power of driving at somekind of normal speed.
Trust me, my car would overheat when idling, and run 190 on the highway..... came to find all 4 cylinders blown in the HG.
