Recently my check engine light came on in my 2002 Honda Civic EX. When i put a code reader on it, besides all the emissions codes that popped up because of my high flow cat, i got a P1457, the book says that means manufacter auxillary emissions controls, what does this mean?

What high-flow catalytic converter did you go with? You're probably having emissions issues because of it. You might want to look into getting a couple spark plug defouler's, and seeing if that doesn't clear things up.
These are available at AutoZone:

The code means that the PCM has detected a malfunction with the evaporative emissions controls. Commonly this is called the 'evap' system. The system is responsible for controling the release of gasoline vapors from the fuel system. The fuel tank has to vent in order to prevent over pressurization from heat and from vacuum as fuel is consumed and as the fuel cools. If the tank were allowed to vent to atmosphere without a filter, the vapors would end up harming the environment. The evap system is designed to filter the Hydrocarbon molecules in fuel vapors from reaching the atmosphere.
The system has a simple goal but is executed with some complexity. If you don't know much about the system I recommend taking the car to someone who has the needed experience and tools to diagnose the problem. By the way, all cats are high flow. Ever notice that a cat is much larger than the pipe leading to and leaving it? |

Well I have a DC sport header, then I have a magnaflow cat and catback exhaust. Sorry if i sound stupid, i don't know much about cars, i am after all a girl.
I do know that the cat was like a made to fit for my car, and i still have whatever O2 sensors that were there. I was trying to avoid taking my car back into the shop, its costly, and I just got it back not to long ago after my accident. But can this whole evap thing be a serious problem that will get worse if i dont fix it right away?? |

the Evap setup is a completey different system. The cat and stuff doesnt have anything to do with it. This is a completey different failure, unrelated to the high flow cat.

the most common cause of the evap code is a loose or defective gas cap.

Well, the evap problem could let fuel vapors into the atmosphere which is bad for the environment. That would be my concern. Plus, there is a fire danger. That is also a concern. If you ever need to smog your car, a check engine light will keep your car from passing. The smog tech wants to see the monitors for pass/fail condition. I recomend fixing your car.

I know the gas cap isn't loose , i checked that because i know EVERYTIME my boyfriend puts gas in my car, it comes on for the loose cap. So I will try a new gas cap in case mine is defective.
Thanks |

The enable criteria for the Evap monitor to run requires alot of steady driving and the car has to have been started cold. It can take days, weeks or even months for the monitor to run again before the cars computer will know if the problem has been fixed.

So, what if i erase the code? Will it only come back on if the problem occurs again?
And it is reading P1457 and P1457pd. What is the pd for?? |

If you erase the code it will come back if the monitor runs and fails. The 'pd' represents a temporary code on aftermarket code readers.

What a coincidence. As I am reading this, it is describing all the issues I have been having.
My car threw 4 codes, P0420 P1456 P1457 P1456 p/d I understand that the p/d is just a duplicated code now. The P0420 just describes that the catalytic converter is not running sufficiently. I always tighten my gas cap, and it just seems retarded that my gas cap would go bad. But now you might have lightened my path. I was rear ended about 4 months ago. I suppose my next step will be calling the insurance company to see if they will cover the cost of fixing this. I will post more as I discover. |

The damage to my car was the passenger side, towards the front. I slid off the road into a fence, they had to fix my door and rocker panel, and i know they said they had to put it on the frame machine to fix the rocker. But i don't think anything past the door was damaged.

I was asking about repairs because I encounter many incomplete repairs from other shops that cause a customer to come in for diagnostics.

It was really icy and stupid me was driving 60mph, my car started to slide, i panicked and hit the brakes, did a couple 360s and took out a fence with the passenger side and slid down a hill into someones yard. I took my car to Carbone Honda to have it repaired.
And when i turn the light off, it will stay off for like 1 day (about 100 miles) then come back on. |

Evap problems are actually really easy to diagnose if you have the tools and experience or at least the system description. Any dealer should be able to diagnose it for an hour.

If you use any method to find a leak make sure you don't apply more than about 1/2 psi to the system at any time. Excessive pressure/vacuum can cause parts to become damaged. Do you top off your gas tank when you fill up? You know, keep pulling the handle even though it shut itself off. "click, click, click, click". |

Yes. This is bad. Topping off can cause liquid fuel in excessive amounts to enter the canister and 2way valve/ bypass solenoid assembly damaging the valve diaphram or causing a leak at the 2way valve. This is probably what caused your DTC, unless it was something else.

Well,
I tightened my gas cap until it clicked, and removed the code with a tool. I've driven 100 miles or so, the code has not come back. Maybe it was a loose gas cap afterall? |
