Spiderman 3 and the American Flag scene -- No spoilers

I went to see spiderman 3 last weekend. Went to a good side of town where people aren't too rude in theators. Theres also a cross-mix of people there. Everyone from people in their 50/60's down to kids that were probably 4 years old, and both men and women.

In the middle of the movie, theres a quick scene where spidey swings in front of a huge American flag. When this happened, probably a good 15-20 people did this boo/pfff/'awe common' type reaction.

I was thinking on the way home, 8 years ago there would have been no reaction to that scene. Are Americans really turning Anti-American?

Did anyone notice the same reaction during the movie?
What's your take on what that means?

personally, it didn't faze me at all. It was only for a few seconds.

actually, if you're bored enough, there's a few threads about it on the imdb.com forums for spider-man 3. Please excuse the stupidity to be found inside though, if you decide to venture inside lol.

I don't think Americans are turning anti-american... they're just getting annoyed with the excessive use of Go-USA! stuff out there.

What annoyed me more was the stuff near the end of the first Spider-Man and the cheesy "if you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!" attitude of the guys throwing trash at the Green Goblin from the bridge.

People are douche bags who want to jump on the anti-america bandwagon. They are the ricers of society. If they hate America so much then why don't they ******* move to Canada or Mexico.

I think some people may just think it's corny because Spiderman is not a hero like Captain America. The American flag has nothing to do with Spiderman, and Spiderman is not a patriot. That's what I personally thought at that part, but I didn't boo or anything. I did think that it was kind of corny though.

Marvel comics has become increasingly political since the whole marvel civil war thing. I dont see where the american flag part fit in in a spiderman movie either, but after reading marvel comics for the last year it dosent surprise me.

All it means to me, is that people associate the flag with our current administration, and their too blinded by hate to realize that our flag is much more than that. There is nothing wrong with being pro-america, but too many people have taken to the idea that american exceptionalism, and the fact that we're the only world superpower are a bad thing. The socialists are winning in that regard, and it's a sad thing... everyone should love america, no matter what they think of our President.

It's like if you worked at an office where the boss was a total douschebag. The job was pretty cool, but the boss sucked so much that he countered what you thought about the job. So you hate the job. Hopefully the boss get's fired soon enough and a responsible replacement comes in and cleans it up....

To be honest I had almost the same reaction, not to BOO or anything but that is just such a blatantly cheap and cheesy way to drum up support for the character. I love patriotism and flag waving, but it was just dumb in the context of the movie. IMO

in the theatre i was in there was a similar reaction.

it came mostly from a crowd of teens if that means anything.

but to me, that scene seemed way too contrived and hokey. maybe people were booing over a scene they thought was excessive in trying to evoke emotion.

That was my impression. Some friends of mine in Scotland were joking about it recently. They're certainly not anti-American (or as much as most Europeans seem to be these days), but they thought it was just a lame attempt to manipulate the audience. It was also probably a studio move, inserted in post-production, and not something Sam Raimi intended to be in the movie.

I thought it all worked well, considering half the movie was about how great Spiderman is. If I recall correctly, it was during the whole ceremony scene right? I think it was slightly out of place, but for people to boo it makes me sick.
