I read a how-to not to long ago on how to replace the dizzy cap and rotor on a SOHC 96-98 civic. now i cant find it?
any help? i need to replace mine.

do not remove the wires from the cap, first remove the cap from distributer via 3 screws. set cap with wires still connected on top of valve cover. look at the base of the rotor for the screw head. if you cannot see it go inside of car and turn ignition for a quick bump. go back and look at rotor. repeat that step until you can see the screw head, remove screw and pull rotor off. replace rotor then screw, and also new cap without wires on to the distributor. notice each wire location on the old cap and remove one by one as you replace them on the same exact post on the new cap to prevent any mixup.

does the dizzy rotor have to be facing up? or facing any particular POSITION when removing?

no but do urself a favor. get a while out pen or something to mark it with so when you put everything back on you know where it goes.
