What is the difference between carb cleaner and brake cleaner? Is there any?

Yeah. Not sure if its bad for the brakes though but I doubt it.

I think the order of strength goes

Starter fluid
Carb Cleaner
Brake cleaner

Brake cleaner is better because it does not leave any residue behind/ any type of film. On something as important as the brakes I would go spend a couple bucks and get a can of brake cleaner.

that's a really good question!

Do you have any engine parts laying around? Spray some brake cleaner on some carbon build-up and see what happens.

Carb cleaner sometimes leaves a residual lubricant (oily film) to lube moving parts of a carb (see label) . Also, never use carb cleaner in a throttle body..only use throttle body cleaner and if it's a Ford, make sure the throttle body cleaner is compatible with the lining.

the best thing to do is mix them together whenever you buy either into one huge spray bottle. then you have twice as much cleaner and its 1.5x stronger. Click the image to open in full size.
