I am looking at buying this 98 Civic, automatic. Owner says the car wont shift on its own, you have to manually do it. What do you think the problem could be? The fix?

i am far from an auto tranny expert, but it sounds valve body related. that would mean the tranny has to come out.

sounds good to me. i would swithc it out,,, that said because i heard it can be hard on the trans sifting manually.. but hey good way to drop the car price trying to buy it

Wow that is a lot of work for something like that, is this a common problem on automatics?

Try giving it a flush and refill with OEM ATF after cleaning out the solenoid valve assembly and check the TPS with a volt meter... You're looking for ~0.5v closed and ~ 5v @ WOT... Worse comes to worst, you can try swapping PCM's with a known good...

Shifting the car manually can be a little bit harsh on the clutch discs and TC because you're starting out in 2nd gear from a dead stop...

I hope you're not paying more than 2K for the car...

my friend blew the tranny on his explorer, and its goin to cost him $1900 to have it re built

There is a known problem with automatics in civics between 96-2000. It could be the linear solenoid, which is different then the solenoid shown in the other post. Is the check engine light on or the D4 trans position indicator flashing? How many miles on the car? Civic autos are usually good to 150k+. I have read about the need to shift manually when the linear solenoid goes bad...

Though much like Rodney said, I'm no auto transmission expert.

I'd drive it home and swap trannies, manual FTW.

after 98 honda auto tranys are either ok or garbage. this one sounds like garbage. don't buy it and you'll be happier with the results... they are never cheap to fix or replace and a manual has a lower blue book value but is historicly more dependable and durable.

Umm okay.

I ended up not buying the car, it had WAY to much body damage
