What is this crap?
Re: Best oil for turbo? 10W-30 Mobil1 Tri Synthetic? (austrian type-R)
i am using mobil 1 5w30 synthetic and i have a trace of oil leaking past the compressor side seal on my turbo.
i'll probly switch to 10w30.
btw, i ran my car for 100miles then drained the oil. it was at about 110degrees. i got it all over my hand and it didnt burn me at all. i guess it stays cool while highway cruising. this was pre turbo tho. just fyi.

if you use synteics oil, it leaves a film on your internals which isnt good. Just use regular oil and change every 2k or so and you should be fine on your cars. I personally use castrol 20-50 on my motor. You also should ask what your engine builder recommends. Depends on clearance, and other factors which may include temperture, when choosing oil weight for the motor.

I'm using regular oil 20w 50. That's what the drag manual recommended. You wouldn't want something too thin anyway.

Synthetic leaves a film??
Synthetic is BY FAR THE BEST HANDS DOWN!!! The best oil to use in a turbocharged car.
You can literally FEEL in the seat the horsepower gain from the reduced friction of synthetic.
Amsoils line of synthetics has seemed to be the best so far, many of the very fast guys use it....

I think people invent excuses to not like synthetic oil because they are cheap and whiney. "It's sooo expensive! I can't afford that". Hmm you can't afford $20 every 3,000 miles? Time for some 87 octane too then, because I heard 92 octane "leaves a film on your internals".

edit: 10w30 in the summer, 5w30 in the winter

I've been using mobil one for a long time now in my integra. I used it in the turbo Saab. Saab engine was fine and still is, just it was a POS and stupid **** kept breaking on it. Maybe cuz I drove it a little hard. Cuz its been running good ever since my sisters been driving it.

I only replied to this thread to share my experience....
old stock b16a2 with DRAG III kit running 6-11psi
-Used the Tri-syn Mobil 1 10w/30=Burn the freakin oil like crazy but motor was fine, it seemed so thin.
new built turbo motor
-castrol gtx "Drive Hard",lol 10w/30=damn **** is great, I change it way too often but whenever I check it, I down ever burn it up. It might just be i change the oil so often its not even funny but it works for me.

Re: Best oil for turbo? 10W-30 Mobil1 Tri Synthetic?
From what I understand, the main difference between synthetics and dino oil is how long the additives in them last. Dino oil lasts 4-5000 miles, while syns can last closer to 8 or 10k miles. This is depending on how hard your engine is run of course.
I change my oil every 2000 miles or so, and at that mileage, what oil you use doesn't really matter. I just buy whatever is on sale, in the weight I use (20w-50) If you run your car hard, or have a turbo (I have/do both) you should probably be changing your oil at less than 3000 miles anyway...

Re: Best oil for turbo? 10W-30 Mobil1 Tri Synthetic? (MintFlavored)
the big change for mobile 1 was removing the long lasting additives. they formulated new additives that essentially accomplish the same thing only they degrade after a while.
This was in response to people complaining about it leaving a film (which synthetic oils DO do.) This is fine as long as you keep using the same oil but if you change you oil to conventional or even to a different synthetic there can be problems.
I've been using synthetic oil in my cars since 1994. Texaco synthetic and mobil 1 mainly. the texaco is better in my opinion. The mobile1 used to be great but the new formula leaves a lot to be desired. It breaks down WAY too fast. (no i haven't put any in a frying pan or used my oil analysis kit) but you can feel (yes that's right god gave you senses which in most cases are more than adaquit for observing things) that the engine does not want to rev as high as easilly when there are even 3k mi since the last oil change.

Re: Best oil for turbo? 10W-30 Mobil1 Tri Synthetic? (bmcc72)
this topic is so all over the place..its almost stupid for us to argue..everyone has their OWN opinion...... use what works for you... ive been using castrol synthetic for 2 years...cars been fine..i jsut actually put in MOBIL1 the other day for the first time..im gonna give it a shot... to some, changing oils is bad..but to others its no bigdeal..i ahvent noticed any probs yet.... im sure things will be fine.
and about that group3 oil business... irmemeber readin in the big oil debate thrad(24 pages or something) that valvoline max life is a pretty darn good oil!! specially for the price.

synthetics are better, there is no arguing that, however, you need to know why. There are additives in the oil that prevent wear on the internal components of the engine. Synthetic also has a higher latent heat temperature than dino oil, meaning it keeps your engine cooler.

Re: Best oil for turbo? 10W-30 Mobil1 Tri Synthetic? (madman13lm)
I have run Mobil 1 in every motor I have built once they break in. To put a spin on things, I was buying a case of mobil 1 from my local parts store, an old guy behind me was buying a case of the store brand oil which was like 89 cents. He asks me wht do I pay $ 4.00 a quart for my stuff, I said it protects better and I run the crap out of my boosted motor and I like to put the best I can get in it for protection. He showed me his 86 Toyota P.U. truck , it had 830,000 miles on it. I was like " Holy S**t", he said he changes the oil every 2000 miles with what ever is on sale and he's had it since new. He delivers newspapers and he has done for like 20 years.
I'm not saying use cheap oil , but it would seem changing it more often would make all the difference.
Back to the old man, When he started the truck it had a rattle but no smoke. He said he does his own maintance , and it's due for another timming chain. He siad he has done 6 of them , so he now waits while it gets super load before he does them.
