Default i have heard people talking about stroker kits, so i have a question

if the stroker kit is suppose to make a motor like the 1.8 into a 2.0, how does it do that? does the crankshaft now have a longer stroke, or shorter stroke? what about boring out the block for the bigger pistons? is that also needed in order ot have the motor be stroked? does this make sense? i guess i am really just asking how a stroker kit works. thanks.

Nothing more than adding a longer stroke to your motor. You can do it with the same bore size. However you have to change your pistons and rods at the same time because the geometry gets all screwed up. Therefore you could bore the block and gain size thru the bore and the stroke. Basically the stroker crank pulls the piston deeper into the block thus adding liters (cubic inches) to your motor size.

that's what i thought. what would happen if you put in a shorter stroking crank in a larger motor? (just for an example, a 1.8 crank in a 2.0)

Playing with the stroke will change your powerband. A longer stroke tends to shift the power to lower RPM for example. Longer stroke also generally means your pistons have less dwell time at TDC which affects cam choice. An example of this is skunk2 Stage 1 cams. They work great in B16's because they have a short stroke which provides lots of dwell, but in B18's which have less dwell they tend to perform like ***.

BTW, dwell at TDC means the amount of time your pistons are stationary at top dead center i.e. how long they're chillin at the top of their stroke.

Shorter crank (or stroke) would take size out of the motor. Shorter stroke usually means higher rpm capability as MrF. says.
