hey, i was driving me car home from the car show and i noticed that my "brake lamp" light was on...just to make clear...its not the E-Brake light. there is a bottom light where the OPEN DOOR lights on the cluster are it reads "Brake Lamp" but i checked all the lights in the back and they all work fine...so why else would that light be on...
NOTE...my car didnt come with the accord book or anything... thanks...

It means one of your rear brake lights are out. Not the tailights but the brake light(s).

dio you have trailer wiring kit installed? If that light comes on that means that either
1. your light is burnt 2. There is an open in the circuit 3. The sensor is bad. |

I recently had a similar problem, it turned out to be the brake light switch under the steering column. Check it out and let me know if this helps!!!

It may sound stupid, but check the third brake light - the one in the middle of your rear window.

Does this "brake light switch" exist on a 90? I am having trouble with the "brake lamp" LED randomly being solid-on with no correlation to the brakes being applied or not. Some days it is on and some days it is off. Tried fiddling with the hand brake but that doesn't seem to be the source of it.

something else to keep in mind is low brake fluid. This will cause the light to come on. And, if the fluid is close to low and you turn and the fluid sloshes around in the resivoir the light will blink

mine has been on forever, i swapped all the bulbs and they all light up. sensor could be bad since I changed one, and the light use to only come on when i applied the brakes for the first time after a start.
but now they are on as soon as I turn the key. but I need to know this switch under the steering column, maybe that will help me out. its not a big deal, but it's annoying. I dont want to waste money on a stupid sensor, so I'll just take that bulb out of the guage cluster if I cant fix it.

I need a picture too!! I looked around under the steering wheel and under the steering column by the brake pedal (99 accord) but I can't find a switch aside from the one that adjusts the height of the steering wheel. Please post the pic or a description of where exactly it is.

I was reading in the forums about the brake lamp light turing ON.
Do you have the picture of the brake light switch under the steering column? Also, any instructions would really help. Thanks for your help. |

A little lazy, its 3AM, your brake bulbs need to be a certain part number, the sensor reads amperage, different resistance bulbs will cause the sensor to turn on your BRAKE LAMP light. Low brake fluid will light up the emergency brake idiot light, not this one. No one has posted this switch under the steering column because it does not exist (does it), pull the little black box (sensor) and see if you can see a burnt circuit and just repair it, have done some Honda and Toyota also. Corrosion in your bulb sockets will mess things up too.
EDIT Read everything, what is this light switch under the steering column?????PLEASE

My son has a 1991 Honda Accord LX which has the proverbial "brake light" issue being discussed.
From what I can gather on my own, the taillight bulb and the brake light bulb are one in the same on this car. When the headlights are on (lit taillights) the bulb works, however, when the brake pedal is depressed, the bulb does not light (or increase in brightness, as would be the case if the head lights were on). What is the next logical cause for the problem? |

It's a dual filament bulb. The brake portion of it is burnt out.

Thank you for the direction. I changed the bulb and installed a dual filament bulb. Still, the problem persists. What now?

2nd it may be the brake light switch that's up under the pedal assembly. As I don't recall there being a separate fuse for each side of the brake/tail lights *Has anyone gotten a picture of it yet?

Yes, the bulb is getting power, as it lights when the headlights are on. The left rear brake light lights when the pedal is depressed, but not the right rear (the center rear light also lights). I looked at the fusing, and there is no set of fuses that segregate the left, center and right brake lamps. The one fuse that is in that circuit is good.
Thanks again for your assistance. |
