another 3 inch exhaust thread - thoughts on the Dynomax VT muffler?
sorry for another 3 inch "make it quiet" thread... BUT...
i'm tired of the drone of my 3 inch exhaust.
it has 2 14" glasspacks inline (i installed 1 of them), and a fart can with a silencer at the back. it was an ebay system that i picked up for $120 shipped, it was stainless, and it was what i needed at the time.
been looking at having a 3 inch exhaust made with a Vibrant 18 inch resonator, and with a Dynomax VT muffler - http://www.dynomax.com/soundsofdynom...ler=vt-muffler
i know there is no quiet 3 inch exhaust, but does anyone have any experience with the VT and it eliminating any drone at cruising speeds?
thanks.

It looks like an interesting piece that I would like to test out, but all they seem to get very mixed reviews.

I have one on my car. B18C1, 4-2-1 Vibrant header, 2.5" Highflow Cat, Ebay 2.5" piping to 3" Dynomax VT Muffler.
Purchased from Jegs.com. My original ebay 2.5" catback was super loud on the highway cruising at 75mph, ~4krpm. Bought a 2.5" Borla ProXS muffler, still super loud. Installed the 3" Dynomax VT muffler and the drone was completely gone. Seriously NONE! I could actually hear my music.
When you get on the throttle the valve in the muffler opens up and it will get loud just like a regular straight through muffler. With this setup i made 170whp 130torque, so you should not see any hp loss.
Search youtube for a video by a infinity g20 with the dynomax vt muffler, it will sound just like that.
Oh FYI, my first muffler rattled and got loud after 3-6 months cause the valve spring weld broke. I returned the item for a warranty return and got a new one. Kind of sucks because you have to pay to ship it to them and then reinstall it. I have not driven my car much since it has been installed, but hopefully it lasts longer.

Read this a while back. Seems like a reasonable concept, but poorly executed. How about using the muffler from a Corvette. It has the dual butterfly setup and I am positive it will last a lot longer than the Dynomax VT.

thanks for the input, and the link...
i'm thinking of giving it a try.
i'd consider a vette muffler, but doubt it would be 3 inch in/out and fit under the rear of an EG hatch...

I would be really helpful if those of you who have actually used one would state which model you used, and possibly get some video footage.
Two models are offered for most case sizes it looks like.
greater than 4.0 liter displacement
less than 4 liter displacement
I really, really want something that is quiet at low throttle angles, but I don't want something that sounds terrible at WOT.
I am really leaning towards trying one out simply because they are pretty damn affordable.
I LOVE the way the Borla Pro XS sounds with a decent resonator and high flow cat, but it is pretty damn loud on an NA setup and still a bit annoying on a turbo setup. The Greddy SP2 that I currently have has to go. It is too damn loud for my old ***, and I really think that the B20VTAK could use some breathing room.

Interesting comparison. Not exactly an insignificant difference.

I have the 3" VT Muffler (4.0l+ version) and it was exactly what I wanted. It made a night and day difference in sound. Sounds very close to stock at idle and so much quieter at part throttle as well. I would highly recommend it

For my 3inch exhaust for my h23vtec i used a 3inch moroso spiral muffler in the middle of my exhaust as a resonator and a 3 inch in and out flow master 30 series muffler.
I had no cat it was quiet as can be untill u got into the high rpm.
Never dynoed the car but it was trapping 80mph in the 1/8th mile in an accord street tuned then track tuned to make that mph.
9.01's at 80mph all night long with a 2.2 60ft street tires.

Re: another 3 inch exhaust thread - thoughts on the Dynomax VT muffler?
my only concern is the "up to 4.0 liters" vs the "over 4.0 liters"...
i'm going to be running ~12.5:1 compression in my 1.8, and i am concerned that the under 4l might not be enough to handle my exhaust velocity and the valve flaps around, but the over 4l might be too "stiff" to open...
any thoughts? i see Mike above is running the "over 4.0l" version - any issues?

Run the over 4.0L version. That is what I run on my 1.8 and i have about 10.9:1 compression. For me the valve opens at around 4k rpms when im at 1/2 throttle.

Still leaning towards a quarter wave resonator.

I would love to hear the setup when it is done. Please post details about the components used. SPL measurements similar to the video I posted would be awesome as well.
FWIW, there are Android apps that will measure noise levels. I dunno how accurate they are for absolute values, but it should be good enough for a comparison.

Anyone run the 2.5" with the under 4.0 muffler? I have one for my b20v but haven't installed it yet. Worried it may open too early and defeat the purpose. With this thread was around a few months ago haha.

It will NOT open up at 4k rpm on the highway. If you give it throttle it will open up. I put 10k miles a year on the highway in this car, trust me.

i have heard of chevy colbalt ss owners using the under 4.0L and they have problems with it opening up too soon. just get the >4.0L one don't waste your time.
