What kind of differences are you looking for?

For starters, 1.6liter VTEC engines have VTEC, duh.

1.6L VTEC = 127ish hp.
1.6L Non-VTEC = 100ish hp (depending on the model)

like is there a difference in performance? is there a change in sound when vtec hits, like a bseries does, or is it more subtle...

It's a sublte change with the SOHC VTEC. If anything, you can just barely hear the engine change tones when it hits.

But the other thing that makes VTEC engines faster is the shorter transmission too. NON-VTEC motors have longer gears, better for fuel economy.

How do you explain d15z1 vtec-e and its long gears?

Well, because the vtec-e is an economy car. It should have longer gears to save more gas. If you have short gears with vtec-e, then what's the point? Hope that clears things up.

EX/Si
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.900
3rd-----1.250
4th-----0.909
5th-----0.750 for Si HB and Del sol Si
or------0.702 for 2 dr or 4 dr sedan
Final Drive---4.250

CX /VX
1st-----3.250
2nd-----1.761
3rd-----1.066
4th-----0.853
5th-----0.702
Final Drive---3.250

The higher the number, the shorter the gear = quicker acceleration

But I think I understand where you get confused when I say "cars with VTEC." In a nutshell, people on HT have a mutual agreement that when someone says "VTEC" they are talking about the high-cam-profile-mad-power engines.

Yes, VTEC-E is technically a VTEC engine, but it achieves its variable valve timing and lift fuciton through the electronic manipulation of the valves. Low rpms = 2valves per cylinder. High rmps = 4 valves per cylinder. This generally does not give you the mad power needed to achieve this result:

Does a 97 del sol s w/ the d16y7 have a better gear ratio then a civic w/ same motor? I have the sol and ratio feels quik, redline 2nd @ 60 mph

I bought a clutch for it and tried using one from a 96- civic dx and it didnt fit. The sol had a different flywheel.

Is it possible that the sol has a y8 tranny on a y7 motor from factory?

Yes, d-series engine/trannys are interchangeable

It's a little worst because the shifting fork is made of aluminum, so they are prone to breaking.

The y8 shifter forks are made of steel, more durable.

nah its better the y8 shifter forks are prone to bending because the stell is a little thinner

It depends on what del sol tranny it is. If it's a 96+ si transmission, it's the same thing. If it's pre96, it has a z6 tranny, which is pretty much the same but they have an aluminum shift fork versus the steel y8 shift fork.
