Default For a living..........

I see all these guys doing swaps and body mods that here in NYC cost a small fortune, and I but my a** 8 hours a day for a measly annual salary (LOL)......
So I figured I'd ask what some of you guys did for a living, maybe I need to start looking into a job change so i can actually afford a vtec head swap, or s2000 taillights onto my teg...........
to give you an example of what i mean............. my former classmate does autobody work, and to take off the bodymoldings on the teg and smooth out the holes was going to run me over $1000 from his shop, to do a bomex type front end painted and installed would run $1200, and supra taillights would run me $1600, and those prices arent easy on my wallet

street pharmicists need not reply as I am not into doing that as a profession
lol

thanks for reading,
Lou

I am a competition elimination specialist for the Russian mafia. It was pretty easy after I found out the competition was composed of pimps, gunrunners, and drug dealers.

I think the words of the late Biggie Smalls work in this case: "..you gotta sling crack rock or have a wicked jump shot..."

There are several young professionals surfing this forum... ranging from 20K per year to over 200K per year...

Some of us would rather not say how little or much how we make, but we all know that this hobby requires a lot of monetary resource.

I'm pretty sure that some of the business owners/entrepenuers on this board have a net worth beyond what some of us would expect. It's nice to be worth a lot of $$$ and also have the option to invest or spend freely. Likewise, being in debt is just as great an experience.

Try a search, too next time.

The real question is why would you want to put taillights from an S2k/Supra/whatever onto your car?
But hey it's not my car I suppose..

LOL @ Cow
dude I really meant that to have those options and be able to afford them would be cool......
but in NY where there are alot of teg's it's cool to have something that makes yours stand out from the others just a little bit, ya know?

Yeah, but on the other hand, if you stand out... it makes you about ten times more likely to get pulled over for absolutely nothing.

let's just say , that many mods don't happen over night, but sometimes you are looking at over 5 years of work invested in an automobile. split that to about 500 a month, and every year you have 6K in mods, and add that up over 5 years, and you have 30K...

okay, for those of us who start small, let's say 200 a month, and every year you spend 2400. that's enough for a b16a swap or some taillights...

just save up your money -- you'd be surprised how much money you waste @ for coffee and going out to eat...

I love sleepers, I would go crazy to have my car looking stock with a turbocharged or supercharged vtec engine in it (especially since my brother just bought a vr6 Gti VW and does nothing but talk trash) but it aint easy........
I'm going to do what the last guy said (just put $300 aside each paycheck and by June I'll have enough to do whatever comfortably)

I've often wondered the same question. I have a pretty good job and started getting into moding my 2000 SE (I couldn't even afford the GS-R although I wanted to really really bad). Just bought new 17's, tail and corner lights and tint this year and it'll be until spring before I can have it all paid off. I see lots of younger (late teens early twenties) people driving way better rides than mine. I think a lot of it is Mommy and Daddy paying for it, however, I have noticed some just pour ALL their money into their cars. Another thing I've notice (and I've noticed it on this board a lot) is many of the people who like customizing or modifying their cars do most of the work themselves. They either work in a garage or have access to one. The biggest expense for most mods is the labor. How many time have I read on this forum someone doing some major suspension work themselves or taking apart or replacing part of their engine???? Lots.

So with that being said, unfortunately some of us doesn't have rich parents (that makes me sick) and some of us don't have the connections or experience to do most of the work ourselves. Part of life I guess.

i figured i spend about 200 a month on eating out and junk food and ****.... imagine an extra 200 a month.... thats plenty of money to fix up a car over time.... but then again that means that my fat *** would no longer be able to enjoy in-n-out ....... also i spend around 100 a month for just gas motherfucking oil companies

I always wonder about this also. I am a network engineer. I make ok money, but I am always poor somehow I can understand people who mod their cars over 5 years. What I don't understand is the guy that makes 40k driving a brand new 30-35k suv and spending 5k on rims the first week he owns it.

I do as much work as I can on my own. Sometimes I F$ck up, but it is a learning experience. Right now I have been rebuilding my tool collection since most of it was stolen late last year. My next mod will be an air compressor hopefully. I am also going to buy a second project car, since I can't afford to break my daily driver anymore.

Full time computer repair tech & custom system builder. Part time mechanic...still(used to be full time alignment tech). On the weekends I help out at a friends pizza shop...yes I deliver quite often. I get the funniest looks and lotsa comments like...wow that's the nicest pizza delivery vehicle I have ever seen! Makes me smile. I think I'm just getting old(34), but I actually like meeting people on the job. Pathetic, I used to consider that just a line of BS.

I'm a student right now! w00t!

On the side I liquidate inventories, and do computer repair. The computer repair thing was going to be a nice part-time job (co-owner) but after having one too many clients who couldn't find the power button I decided against it.

Working on the college. When Friday hits it's working on the car (getting it ready for Monday )

its lots of factors.. some of us have businesses, some have a college degree and a decent paying job, others work their *** off 40+ hrs a week and on weekends, others are "Powered by their Parents" (or Sponsored by their parents), some people have nice GF's that buy them car parts, and theres the shady *** ****'s who go out and steal car parts, buy stolen parts, etc.... then theres also the guys who work to make an OK living.. but live beyond their means and are thousands in debt because of their car.. I'm sure of all the cars you've seen these situations fit many of the owners...

just because someone is young and has a nice ride doesn't mean its all paid for.. also doesn't mean they slang on the streets either.. theres lots of things and I'm sure everyones in a different financial situation... I'm in my 20's and I guess you could consider me to have several nice cars...

its all hard work, saving, and DOING YOUR OWN WORK... a lot of the cost when modding a car is labor...think about it.. $50-75/hour adds up (for labor on installs, maintenance, repairs, etc..) if you buy a decent set of tools, shop manual (helms) and have decent knowledge or frenz to help you out.. you just pay for parts and save A LOT on labor.. I figure on weekends your busy pulling IN money at your job... on a weekday when your not making money (unless you work on weekends) do you really wanna pay sum1 $50+/hour on something you can wrench yourself? I sure don't... plus its fun working on your car.. and you get more satisfaction knowing that YOU installed it w/ the utmost care, chose quality parts, did the job right... and gained knowledge on how things on your car work, are assembled, installed, etc... versus just paying sum1 to install your stuff...

you can save yourself A LOT of money on installs, maintenance, mods, etc... I've saved thousands doing my own maintenance and aftermarket parts installs.. look at it this way... at 100K (had the car since it was new).. if you ONLY count the 30K intervals.. that would have been 3 already (30K, 60K, 90K).... if I were to go to the dealer each time.. thats almost a G right there (approx $300+ sumthing)... doing the maintenance yourself.. oil changes cost like $25 (synthetic oil and oil filter) or $10 or so (dino oil and oil filter)... and for the larger maintenance.. they cost like $100-150 or so in parts.. versus $300+ for the parts/service at the dealer... I spend countless hours on the internet looking for info on parts, specs, peoples reviews/opinions and make a decision on what to buy..AND the best deal/price on the parts... you wouldn't believe the varying prices from different local shops, internet retailers, etc...

as for me.. my parents bought/paid for my car for graduating HS and getting into a good 4 year college.. I was to take up all other costs associated w/ the car (other than the initial purchase)...when I was in college.. I basically saved whenever I could... instead of eating out everyday I'd eat ramyun or whatever.. me and my friends had a joke "powered by Ramyun" haha cuz thats how a lot of us saved on mods... those $100+ jordans or that $200+ Polo Sport Jacket or whatever..... do you really NEED them? or would you rather save and apply it to your car? cigarettes.. at like $4/pack.. that adds up quick..save on stuff like that...

I was able to get some pretty nice mods saving up my money... I'm out of college now and computers/networking pays decent enough to have a few toys... but no matter how much income you make.. its how much you save..I still save a decent amount..don't spend it all on my car or anything.... if you make a decent income and splurge on everything..spend your paycheck each month.. you might have a lot of merchandise/goodies to show for.. but no money in the bank account.. thats not good...(IMO)....

so even though you see some guy in a nice *** car.. doesn't mean he's not in debt.. or doesn't work his *** off like the next guy... sometimes its hook upz... you meet people who do some kind of work and can hook you up on body work or parts, or whatever... everyone has a different source of funds for their mods...

sorry for the long reply...
