the opposite of advancing the timing.
spark fires later.

ah man, that opens up a list of answers. that totally depends on what the particular setup is. most cases its a safe guard not to blow a motor while running boost, N20... whatever. some cars can find a few extra hp by advancing the timing a little and running it on the edge. too much will cause detination and BAM, your gonna have a bad day . Retarding will be easier on the motor but it will be slower. Retard it too much and your EGT will sky-rocket and you'll probably burn a valve. look for books on this stuff and you'll glide through the forum. maybe- "how to build honda horse power" or something like that.

Retard timing means that the sparkplug fires later on the combustion stroke.
feks 26*BTDC, or before the piston has reached topdeadcenter.(of 360* one rpm)

advanced timing creates more cylinder pressure as the fire ignits early when the piston is on the way up to tdc, firing the fuelmix and start the combustion against the pistons movement.( Like kicking a ball when it rolls against you, hit correct, ball fly hard, hit late weak ball, hitt early miss ball )
advancing timing makes the pressure go up, and the torque will rise, to much will cause knocking/detonation, that means your cyl pressure rices hugely, causing sleeeves to crack,, rods bend or brake, and pistons to crack/ get a nice hole.

as you retard ignition, the combustion will be moved further inn to the exhaust port.

a combustion last |--------| long, when rpm rises the combustion last the same it has only less time doing it, thats why timing is altered on 9000rpm vs idle (800-900rpm)
so to much retarding creates a lot of heat in the cylinder head, and can melt down valves in some occations.

ignition timing should be set, of what kinds of fuel you use, compression, how much boost etc.

proffesional tuners will lissen to your engine if its knocking, when engine is beeing tuned up.

(sorry if I have any language errors, try write this in Norwegian )

Thats the best and easy to understand answer I've ever heard.

Even Newbies will know what you are talking about...when you use the baseball theory to explain it.
