You guys crack me up!

The whistle you hear is nothing more than that air filter. Close your intake box and BAM! Like magic; no more whistle.

LMAO. Hilarious how people can get so paranoid.

PS: I think the whistle is kind of cool (sound like the car has something crazy in the hood) I take my box off once a while for $h!ts and giggles. No performance advantages of having it off BTW (to me it actually feels less reactive and annoying at WOT).

Sorry bro I don't really have access to a diagram right now, or a car for that matter to take it apart & show you. But it's really not too difficult, on a scale of 1-10 it's about a 2. Pick up a Haynes Manual from the store while you're out getting intake cleaner.

The easiest way to check is just to pull off your intake assembly; there's two holes right before the butterfly, the bottom one goes through the FITV. Put your finger over it, & the squeal should stop.

If not, try the other hole since you have the intake off, it might be your IACV (Idle Air Control Valvev - it's basically another FIT valve but not as useless).

Wow I'm surprised nobody mentioned timing belt tensioner. It also could be a pulley or a belt. When the engine is idling, place your ear around the engine bay and give us an idea of where the noise is coming from.

From that video that's all I heard, the whistle from the box - but then again, all I have are crappy laptop speakers.

well i still have not had time to take it to the shop to have them look at it.
im thinking its still from the intake area but i also wonder if it could be the power steering bearings.. hmm
i will update when i find a cure.

doesn't sound your doing anything to isolate the problem. I took of my intake and held my hand up to my throttle body were the noise was coming from. at a certain angle with my hand covering it the noise stops. I am wondering if the plate has been bent which would cause more air then normal to get into the intake mani at idle causing idle surge which is the computer correcting for the increase in air coming through at idle. The car drives fine. However its an annoying loud like a wleded civic tailpipe as well as the idle surge at 15-20

My 1999 GSR Sedan has 127K on the odometer and is making a similar noise. Its definitely from the left side of the engine. Its loudest around the timing belt area. Unsure if its t-belt rubbing the VC or something like the alternator, PS, AC compressor or the accessory belts..... Thanks!

Hate to bump an old thread, but i am having this same problem, and there seems to be no solution posted here.

My whistle sound is coming from the #1 cylinder, clear as day when i put my head on the valve cover. It's right in that area. I did a valve adjustment and this sound is present when my car warms up, after reassembly. Any thoughts?

I'm quite shocked no one has mentioned the brake booster in this thread, when they start to go out they can cause a whistling noise, which in reality is a vacuum leak. Most people forget also sound does travel and can be hard to pin point where its actually coming from. But I'd check that, is what i usually find to be the problem when working in my shop.

I saw *****, so I'm responding. You probably have something stuck in your cylinder head, have a bad cam journal, a lubrication problem, or mice. I'd say it's probably mice.
