Default Brake rotors on a 1997 Accord.

I was driving by a brake job place to get some prices when the technician told me the following. He said that on my model vehicle, I cannot take the rotors off to OReilly and get them turned. He said they have to be machines while still on the car. Is this bullshit or what?

Having them re-ground on the car is the easier (of two) ways to address warped / damaged front brake rotors on the 5th Gen Accords. The second involves three hours of swearing, a hydralic press and a midget (well almost).
Honda, in it's INFINITE wisdom, saw fit to mount the rotors to the back side of the hub flange, thus requiring the whole she-bang to come off to get to them.

Yes, he was correct, as far as he went

That's ******* stupid....Why on that generation of Accord did they choose to do this? I assume on later generations, it's not the case right?

Great, now I have to goto Just Brakes and pay $99 for something that could have cost me around $40 to do myself...******* brilliant...I hate you Honda!

Alot of us Accord owners wonder why this was done this way, but I have heard that you can convert it. I may be doing this next time I have to replace my brakes I was also thinking about doing the Legend brake upgrade as well.

I would not go to Just Brakes either, that is just about as bad as going to Jiffy Lube to get your oil changed. IMO just go buy some new rotors and install them yourself, its not that hard, just time consuming to do the job.

Check this forum: http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1427790. The design of the front brakes is exactly the same for all of the Accords 90-97.

Doing it yourself: the toughest part is loosening the axle nuts (I personally broke 2 braker bars) and disconnecting ball joints (5 ton puller works good). But with the right tools it is not too bad. And actually there is no need for a hydraulic press. I've done it myself without it. Check this link http://www.geocities.com/vladi...1.pdf - I followed it and it worked. The only difference is I had to remove the knuckle complely and I used regular hammer.

Totally I spent 7 hours, but this included two trips to the parts store to get new breaker bars. If you know how to do it - it will take about 3-4 hours, if you don't - 5-6. This is my personal opinion. I'm not trying to be Honda super specialist Click the image to open in full size..

Doing it in a repair shop - you will be charged at least $200, I've seen invoice for rotor replacement on my Accord 96 from the previous owner - $300, and max I've seen was $400.

The job is tough, but not a complete disaster.

It is also possible to turn them, but because of the desing of the brakes, it can be done only right on the car. I choose replacing the rotors. The brakes work great since then, even better than on my newer Accord 96.

96 Accord - 150k runs just great.

What worked for me might or might not work for you. And vice versa.

so to help the matter disconnect all brake hard ware what i mean pull the caliper to the side ,remove caliper housing , then break axle nut loose after that pop balljoint pull spindle to side so now theres four bolts on back remove those and acouple of swings with a nice heavy hammer the rotor and hub fall out as one once out remove the four 14mm bolts on front of rotor and the rest is down hill if ?s just ask
