Default 225/50 14s for autox?

i've been trying to pick a tire size to use for the 2006 autox season on my 3rd gen teg. anyone using 225/50 14s? what width of wheel are you using? any other suggestions on the widest tire i could fit with non-rolled fenders?

thanks!

What class? What tires are you looking at? Why don't you roll your fenders?

Why not 225/45 15's?

the 14s are ever so slightly wider.

And if you're looking at kumho, they don't make a 225/45/15, so there's a gearing advantage if you're sticking with the cheaper Kumhos.

I am running that size up front on 5" wide rims - no problems with rubbing at all. They're ancient BFG's I got for free.

Hmmm... for some reason I thought that the 225/45 15 Hoosiers were a little wider than the 225/50 14 Hoosiers?

Personally, with all the tire integrity problems Kumho has had, I think I've switched permanently to Hoosier.

other than the first batch of V710s, what are you talking about?

I was also referring to the problems they initially had with the availability and construction of the V700's...

edit: not to mention the supply problems they had last year with the 235/45 13 V700's

I am currently running 225/50/14 RA1's on a 5.5" wide wheel. I think the tire is a bit too wide for a 6" or under wheel, pretty numb turn in.
I was having a hard time getting to grips with what pressure to run.
I have not tried these in an auto-x yet, just on the track, car is a 99 SiR (Si) with Neuspeed Sports, AGX's and the A-spec 22mm rear bar kit.

I've run Hoosier so3's and V700's in that size on 8" Diamond wheels. The fenders do need to be rolled. The newer so5's and V710's are wider. I would consider a 8.5 or 9" wheel and either a narrower wheel in back or possibly 205 tires depending on how you like a car to handle. The one issue is if your area tends to run tighter, slower courses or more open ones. The 225/13's give better gearing for the courses I run and they are short enough that overheating is not an issue. At this point it does limit me to only Hoosier tires unless the 710 in 215/13 actually is as wide as the Hoosier 225.

so 225s would fit on a 6.5" wheel? i'm thinking 225s up front and 205s in rear, and i'll roll the front fenders a bit if i have to.

i'm not too concerned about my class, but i'm in DSP in our region. i'm not sure how that relates to SCCA classes.

Yest the 225's will fit fine on a 6.5" rim. A wider wheel will give a better footprint, but those will work OK.

I pity the poor bastard who had to mount 225 BFG R1s on a 5" wide wheel
