98 Accord Gas Mileage
Hey All,
I have a 4 DR 98 Accord EX w/ Manual Tranny and think that I am not getting proper gas mileage. I was hoping for some light to be shedded here. I'm getting like 23-24 mpg and this is in a Local/Highway mix. EPA rates 25/31...
With gas the way it is today you have to try your best to save. Is this normal, I have a distraut feeling that it is not. I do drive fast in highways, normally 75-80. Still I feel that the mileage per gallon is no where near close to what I'm suppose to be getting... Normally a tank of gas would last me at the MOST 350 miles again that is mixed driving conditions.
Thanks all for any info...

23-24 is by far nothing to shake a stick at (feel the pain of all the Hummer H2 drivers out there ) but there are several things you can check.
Tire pressure
Fresh Air Filter
State of Engine Tune
there's other stuff which can be discussed, but it will be determined by how much money to spend in order to save money..... You reach a point of diminishing returns.
Of course, if 90% of your driving is city / metropolitan - you're pretty much on the mark

Re: 98 Accord Gas Mileage (rmd0311)
I have a 99 Accord LX, 4-dr, 4 cyl, auto trans, 100,000 miles, 17 gal tank.
I get around 23-25 mixed driving with a Thule bike/ski roof rack on most of the year. With mixed city and hwy I get right around 350 miles when my low gas light comes on. If I make to 400 miles on mixed driving, I am on fumes. If I am on just the hwy with no roof rack running 60-80 MPH I can get 450-500 miles per tank.
Other factors can be driving style and if your running the AC all the time. I am in Seattle so I run the AC for a week out of the year. Of course I go through wipers every 8 months or so.

Re: 98 Accord Gas Mileage (Lowski)
23 to 25 mpg is this a V6 or 4 cyl? If its a V6 with mixed driving I would say thats about right. Like the previous guy said it could be tire pressure, air filter and maintance. But if you do alot of stop and go driving or stomp on the gas when you accelerate that could be it, or if you going 75 to 80 with your windows down that could be a factor. Also, did you modify your car in anyway?

Re: (whoagorgeous)
I drove 720 miles one way and 720 miles back last week (visiting home).
With A/C, driving at 80mph, I averaged 27.2mpg
Without A/C, driving at 75mph, I averaged 30.
Of the 1440 miles I drove, I averaged 28 mpg total.
-2000 Accord auto, intake, exhaust, suspension.

I get 27 mpg city and 38 mpg highway on my '94 Accord LX, 226,800 miles on it. I have used synthetic motor oil in it ever since I bought it at 74,000 miles. And since you have a manual, switch to synthetic oil in the transmission, the manuals take 5w30 motor oil anyway.
I used to have an old '86 Nova/Corolla, and used semi-synthetic motor oil in the engine, but regular stuff in the transmission. I changed the transmission oil, which was your heavy 75w90 stuff, to a synthetic 75w90. I do know that at 236,000, that car got 35mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway. The synthetic in the maual was really noticable when I drove it. The car just shifted and drove a lot smoother.
You could reasonably buy 5w30 synthetic for your engine and tranny, have them put in, or do it yourself as I prefer-but only if you know how-, and see how it affects your mileage. We have to do everything we can to squeeze every last mpg out of our cars. I can't afford a hybrid, and my girlfriend has an Explorer that she is begining to hate.

Re: (Gen_X_Accord)
If I put manual tranny fluid in my automatic it will croak and that is a bad thing right?
I can get 38 but driving 55 SUCKS when you got 640+ miles to drive. I can live with 6 less mpg in order to go 25mph faster ;-)

Re: (whoagorgeous)
My car is a 4 Cyl Manual with 69k miles... I did a tune not long ago and the dealer replaced the cat converter the other day because my CEL came on and it was the CAT (under warranty of course). I use Synthetic 5W30. Can you really use that on the tranny?
Anyways, last roll around I got 330 when the gas light came on...
Air Filter is new, TUne has been done, tires look fine but will check the pressure. Just trying to get as much as I can for every single gallon.

I have a 2000 EX manual and I get about 400 on a tank, but I drive it very conservatively. If you are getitng that kind of mileage, I would definitely look into a tune-up or watch your driving. You might want to make sure you are putting good gas in too, something like Chevron or Mobile. Better gas will usually get you better mileage.

99 accord 5spd... without air, I get 26-27mpg city, and 30-32mpg hwy. I lose 2-3mpg with the air on. Well kept motor with 140K miles and JET tuned.

Re: (rmd0311)
If it is a Honda, you can put the 5w30 in it. The owner manual, or somthing like a Chilton's repair manual, will tell you the fluid specs. But from everything I've ever seen, Honda manual transmissions use 5w30 or 10w30 motor oil. So try some sythetic out. But you should already be getting better gas milage than what you posted, unless you do nothing but massive stop and go traffic in your town.

Re: 98 Accord Gas Mileage (rmd0311)
I'm curious if you ever determined the culprit of your poor gas mileage problem?
I have a 98 Honda Accord EX with manual trans and I'm experiencing the EXACT scenario as you! For nine years the car performed exactly as adverteised, with respect to gas mileage (25/31), then out of the blue the mileage dropped same as yours (20-city, 25-high way). The car still runs good, but the mileage now sucks!
I took the car to the local Honda shop (Lute Riley Honda of Richardson TX), and twice they told me there was nothing wrong with my car. On the first visit, they pressured me into doing a complete tune up, even tough I had swapped all the same parts only 20K miles earlier (dist-cap, rotor button, plugs, plug-wires, air-filter, etc..). As I expected, the $300 tune up made no difference.
The 98 Accord now has 150K miles on it, and though it still runs great, it has had this poor-mileage problem for approximately one year. Do you have anything more that you can add to the solution of this problem.
Thanks in advance.
JJ

He said that he had manual transmission and a '98, thus it is a 4 cylinder. I'm not sure when V6's were first offered with manual tranmission, but the '98 and '99 V6's were definately only in automatic.
As for mileage ('99 LX 5-speed), I really haven't checked my city mileage in a while but it's not that far from 24-25 mpg for city/highway mix.

Re: 98 Accord Gas Mileage (YeuEmMaiMai)
I am terrified to figure out why I'm only getting about 19mpg city. I dont think thats good at ALL. 93k miles. I think it went down from about 22mpg when I put my intake on. I'll go about 75 miles on about 4-5 gallons. Distributor, wires, spark, air filter, tire pressure is all good. NO A/C. I don't drive hard at all!! Rarely above 3k RPMs, easy accel.
How can I improve my mileage?!! please help guys

Re: 98 Accord Gas Mileage (tpot90)
auto or manual?
check to see if your tstat is stuck partially or all the way open. That will suck 2-3mpg off of your milage right there since engine is always running cold and if you have an auto the torque converter will not lock up
and this thread is old enough that I acutually have a CL type S now and I still get better gas milage than the OP
24 mixed 22 city and 31-32 highway

Automatic. Clarify: tstat= thermostat, correct? If so, where is the tstat located on my car? And assuming it is stuck open, how do I correct the problem? I want to look into this!
Can i pick one up from an advanced auto store, or is OEM really recommended?

Re: 98 Accord Gas Mileage (tpot90)
Oh man. I think I started getting worse fuel economy since I switched to an ALL aluminum radiator, after mine developed a crack. I decided to get full aluminum with aluminum top and bottom tanks as well. At first, i was wondering if it was beacuse I lowered my car, but now, I know that my car runs a bit cooler, so it would make sense.
I get a maximum of 30MPG on the interstate now, when I used to be able to get 32-33MPG easily.

But can anyone tell me if there is a way to fix this problem? Or do i NEED to buy a new one? Can I get one from an advanced auto, or should I use OEM?

Just get an oem one.
I just calculated my mpg the other day. Getting a steady 26-28mpg on my 98 coupe with rebuilt auto. Driven semi aggressively through the backroads.
