i am currently stripping some wheels down the bare metal and i was wondering what people recommend on clearing the wheels. should i take them to a painter and have him clear them or should i just get some spray can clear coat?

did you clear the lip also? Anyone know which way would be better for a polished lip, clear or no clear? I'm wondering if with the clear on the polished lip that it wont go dull and you wouldnt have to repolish. but if it does, then you have to strip the clear back off?? Anyone have opinions

Man those are clean....I did the same to my rsx stocks.
Instead of sandpaper I use grey scotch brite.3M07448. Then I use a filler primer for deep scratches...and etch primer on the other ones that were fine...then I painted mine with a spray gun base coat then clear coated them....I work at sherwin williams auto paint so I get phat hook ups....
When u use a clear coat with a hardener you can cut and buff them to make them a mirror shine...otherwise out of a spray can you have to actually wait at least 30 day for the acrylic paint to completely cure...
AIM me at NOBCREW602 for tips.....
But again good job very nice mang....
Props.....BUMP

Default Wicked gunmketal job on the rims!!!

Wicked jonb on the gunmetal rims, wicked! I love it very professional looking and the clear does wonders. For those who don't know Dupli-color makes special wheel paints including gunmetal and clear available at most Automotive stores..

I did my winter rims also, but they have scartches and chips, and neglected from the winter weather, i want to refinish them nicely and like you did: use a TON of clear!!! whoohooo!

This could and prob. does sound totally lazy but I have another pair of beater wheels for bad weather am thinking about just painting them without stripping etc. They aren't worth the time to make them look that nice.

Has anyone just painted over the stock finish? How did it turn out?

done it on plastic wheel covers and turned out great. Now if you have OEM aluminum wheels, they will have a thick clear coat on them. To promote proper adhesion you will need to sand it with some 320sand paper atleast.

Default rim painting?

I think it looks nice for a while, but after that, it will start chipping and fading and it will continuely have to be repainted. Powdercoating would be the way to go...
