Default EGR Valve/Port Question

On a H22a, if you pull the EGR out of the IM there is that big port on the end. Inside the manifold does it split off with small ports for each cylinder or is it just one big port?

I'm asking because I want to try and clean in there.

I'm not exactly sure what it does in there - all I know is, it's a bitch to clean . . .

I tried a wide assortment of brushes & pipe cleaners with carb cleaner, couldn't get my insufficient flow CEL to keep from coming back. Finally had success using some Seafoam - just filled up the EGR ports with it, bolted the valve back on top, let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes, and started it back up. Drove it around to clear the crap out - haven't seen the CEL since . . .

That's funny because that is what I was about to do!
Did you just dump in in the hole the EGR sits in?

Yup, when you take off the valve, there's the two ports. Just use a funnel & fill up each one with as much Seafoam as will fit (it doesn't take much at all - like a tenth of the bottle). Then reinstall everything, start it up, & take it out for a spin.

It'll obviously run/idle like crap until the Seafoam clears out - and even after that it may take a few tries of resetting the ECU before things go back to normal. Once all the carbon build-up in the EGR ports breaks down, it'll be pulled through the engine, and it takes a couple cycles for it to all go away.

Why clean it out? A lot of people block it off entirely.

Blocking it off really doesn't accomplish anything. The EGR is only active under part throttle/cruising so it doesn't affect performance.

I'm trying to pass inspection, so if I block it off I will get a CEL and fail. I want to clean the ports to try and get rid of random misfire CEL's I'm getting.

Yeah, pulling up to an inspection station with an EGR CEL on doesn't go over too well most of the time.

Individual state emission standards dependent, of course.

Yeah, OBDI can be blocked off, you just have to have it plugged in and you won't get a CEL.

I'm going to try this too. My CEL has been on since I bought my car in January. Never had a misfire or anything, but the CEL is annoying and I'd like to get rid of that rough idle.

Why not get the EGR plug caps from Honda and clean the ports the correct way? Remove the plugs with a small slidehammer, clean the ports and install the plug caps. Dont change the EGR valve, it wont solve a p0401 EGR a/f insufficient code. Clean the ports on the I.M runners and clear the code. hth

i would have to agree and say that you should just take the time to clean out all of the individual ports the way you are supposed to. like cory mentioned above, a slide hammer gets the caps off the intake runners, and some wire brush and carb cleaner will get all the carbon out, then you just hammer in the new ports. when i did mine, i also thought about doing the seafoam in the intake manifold trick, but then i read somewhere that it gets into every little crack and gap, which could mess up your oil lubrication and journal clearances. plus on the can of seafoam it even says that they recommend that you flush out your oil system very well 150 or something miles after you put it in to get it all out of your oil system.

If you are gonna do the Seafoam, why not just wait until you need an oil change??? However, it sounds like the thorough cleaning might be worth a try.

I believe that the older obd1 intake manifolds do not have the egr plugs but I could be wrong.

Am I wrong for assuming this? if someone has a write up I know I read one a while ago but it was for the accord.

lol I just did this to my car last week. Seems I had been having rough idle for about a year, since I did my swap. I went to pep boys and picked up some of their throttle body cleaner for about 5 bucks. I pulled the EGR off and sprayed some cleaner and like magic the crap just started melting off. You can use a toothpick and a cotton swab to scrape some of the gunk off. You can also spray some in the ports and let it sit for a few minutes. Also, pull off the intake, open the throttle and spray some in there. Start up the car and immediately you should feen the difference.
