I'm looking at having to do this myself also, but wasn't sure if I should or not or just go buy a new starter. Let me know if you had to do any other work like sanding anything else down ... etc....</TD></TR></TABLE>
I did not modify anything, but I had to use a couple of original pieces from one of the old contacts, because not all the pieces in one of the Toyota parts bags matched completely. I think it was on the larger contact, I had to re-use the bolt and the plastic insulator on the outside because the Toyota ones were different shapes/sizes.

I know your car maybe fixed but the sympton your are describing is also consistant with poor battery connections. My friends Accord would do that and we just replaced the battery cables and cleaned the terminals to fix it.

Re: Need a new starter? (skunked)
my car has been doing the same thing as what patrick described, and my car only has like 101k miles on it. So hopefully after this rebuild it'll be ok, i talked to a shop and they said the armature (sp) may also be kinda worn out, so would I be able to fix this up also or would it just need to be replaced?

well when I took my starter apart, the contacts did indeed look very worn, so I'm almost positive that was the problem.

yea I started to disect the wiring going to my starter and completely forgot that there was a one of those factory "Anti-Theft System" chips which cut into the starter wire. I removed that and walla, everything is good to go.
I don't think I had to replace the contacts, but hey, I know the starter won't be giving me any problems anytime soon.

Here is a picture which shows the old worn contact and the brand new contact. Notice the recessed lip on the old worn contact? Once the contacts becomes worn to a certain limit the plunger cannot make good contact with the contacts and this is the cause of the problem. HTH

Okay guys i hope this helps. I have had the EXACAT problem with my car. I ended up lookin around my motor and i found some wires that hook up near the o2 sensor and they were connected shitty and laying up against the transmission. My guess is it was getting a bad connection or ground, i had the problem for a long time but as soon as i wired them all back together, it has started perfect for over 2 weeks! So just look around, check your grounds and connections near the transmission and i hope you find something!

I had a brand new battery and cables and alternator and still had the problem, just look for loose grounds or connections. Make sure there is no bad connection before you go out and buy a starter.

I replaced the starter contact points back in February '05 and since then I haven't had any issues with the starter (ie. "clicking" noise). My car starts on the 1st turn of the key now.

do you know if its the same with a auto starter? i know the starter is alittle different, but i wonder if the toyota parts would be the same ones listed before?

i had the same problem, i worked at a toyota dealership and noticed they stocked the contacts, i replaced them and cleaned up the plunger. and now it works like a charm everytime, and i did this a couple of months ago and never had a problem since.

Good fvkin **** man! I knew that its possible to do this, but never knew what part # is needed. My dad does this to his old GM/Toyota truck all the time.
Any idea, for part #'s for civics and acura tl's also? -=P Anyone know how I can find this out?
EDIT:: gues what I just found out. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...wItem
"This is a set of new Nippon Denso starter rebuild kit. It fits all Nippon Denso starters used on Janpanese passenger cars, SUV, mini-van, light trucks; and domestic Chevy GM B-body cars with LT1 engine, like Corvette, Firebird, Impala, ...
Also some domestic cars use Nippon Denso starters, like 1990 - 1996 Chevy Corvette, LT1 engine and B-body cars."

Re: (redDCcoupe)
It must be that time of year again. MY 90 LS had the exact same symptoms, so I called around and it ended up NAPA had the cheapest one at 125 bucks (+30 core). I'm just gonna rebuild my old one and sell it now that I know where to get the rebuild parts, thanks BSQ
