yea im thinking that skinny piece of metal behind the rotor is rubbing against it ... should i just go in there n try to bend it away from the rotor?

Yup just bend it back so its not hitting the rotor.

I had a tiny tiny, TINY rock get inbetween that metal dust flap and the left front rotor. Holy crap it sounded like I was killing a cat or something.

can ur rotors get damaged like that? it's not on the actual surface of the rotor but it's the outer edge of it ... seems to me like they'd become weakerand have a smaller radius / diameter after time

I would suggest using a c-clamp and using the old brake pad over the piston to press it back in for the simple reason that you want the piston to go in nice and even, using channel locks could **** the piston slightly and cause damage to the caliper. Might take a few seconds longer to use the c-clamp but seems a bit faster than changing out calipers. Just my .02.
