Default Need Help. Newb Axle question

i tried searching, but i dont know anything about axles so it was hard to find the answer i need.
my car was clicking/rubbing and i couldnt figure it out. i knew it was axle related related but i didnt know what to look for.
once i got my car in the shop and raised the mech. showed me where the problem was
(this is the best pic i could find that i could use for reference, it is not a pic of my car/axle)
the part circled is where he showed me it was destroyed. you could see it wobbleing when he spon the wheel by hand.
my question is, what do i need to replace. the mech. told me there was no axles in any nearby junkyards and no stores i.e. autozone could order what i needed. i dont know why that is? he did say brand new from honda it would be $400 and some aftermarket brand he could get was 270 for each side. im confused, your probably confused by reading this. any help is appriciated, thanks

edit: forgot to mention! motor is 96 B18C1

I say your mech is lieing to you....I had to replace the same axle in my eg and it only cost 60-70 bucks brand spanking new ( that is if you return your old one to place you got your new axle shaft)....and I bet you could find one in a junkyard too.......I say stick it to the man and find a new mech or do it yourself...its actually pretty easy......I did it myself.....but anyways..........your totally getting jib.......(i.e. I order my axle shaft at NAPA) peace out bro!

p.s. that clicking noise could be your CV shaft which is on the other end...plus....you only have to replace one....not both

Inner CV joint. Should be cheaper to buy the whole half shaft at Autozone. They will want yours in exchange. Don't buy one from a junkyard. These are parts that wear out. Buy a rebuilt one from Autozone. I will come with a warantee.

You can get remanufactured axles (with lifetime replacment warranties) for $60 plus core deposit from autozone. It is not to diffiuclt to do yourself, you just have to know what your doing. Here is a shoping list.

Suspension Grease
Replacement Axle
New 32mm Hub nut (should come on with your new axle, but not always)
A couple quarts of Honda Manual Transmission Fluid (get 3 just in case)
A pack of cotter pins (same size as one on your Lower Ball joint nut)
New Transmission Drain plug washer
New Transmission Fill plug washer
Tubing that fits into transmission fill hole & a clean funnel

First remove hub cap on that side
Remove the hub nut w/ a breaker bar (may need a pipe to extend breaker bar)
Loosen Lug nuts
Jack up car & place on jack stands
Remove the wheel
Remove Cotter pin from lower balljoint Castle nut
Remove Castle nut
Drain Transmission & replace drainplug washer
Reinstall Drain plug
Seperate LCA from balljoint stud (click HERE for easy instructions)
Disconnect Damper fork from the bottom of your shock & remove it (completly remove the 2 bolts first)
Lift steering knuckle out of the LCA
Tap axle in through steering knuckle while pulling knuckle towards you
Use a Big flat head screwdriver to pop inner axle out of transmission
Grease all surfaces of the new axle were it will go into/touch the transmission
Insert the inner joint into the transmission until it snaps into place
Inseart outer joint into hub/knuckle & push it thorough
If it won't go in gently tap around between the wheel studs w/ a hammer until the axle is sticking out
Thread on the new hub nut (don't torque down)
Insert the lower balljoint into the LCA
Reinstall the damper fork & torque upper pinch bolt to spec (don't tighten the lower bolt yet)
Place jack under the LCA & raise until car starts lifting (make sure balljoint stud is still in LCA)
Have a friend push down on the brake rotor while you torque the balljoint caslte nut to spec
Install new cotter pin & torque down damper fork bolt to spec
Remove jack
Remove Transmission Fill plug
Fill transmission until fluid starts running out of the hole
Replace Fill plug washer & install fill plug (torque to spec)
Put wheel on & install lug nuts
Lower car to ground
Torque lug nuts to spec
Torque Hub nut to spec
Drive car & make sure it doesn't explode...

Yeah, they are complete units w/ new hub nuts (at autozone anyways).

Your welcome. Also, I added this to the EG+ FAQ, so everybody will have it from now on...

11. Now take your hammer and LIGHTLY tap on the end of the axle to get it free from the spindle:

Let me just say how much load of crap this step is. Inorder to take off the axle at this point you must bang it HARD. Tapping it LIGHTLY isnt gonna do a damn thing.

You can find used parts, I just saw some brand new OEM's on Ebay....100$

I just got my front right axle replaced, was rubbing grinding...250$ is what it is costing, parts only. Also trailing arms, front and rear.
