Has anyone here used these on anything but an 84-87 Civic/CRX? I'm contemplating going back to drums on the rear of my car, and want to use these aluminum drums to get the weight down. I've read on a website recently that the backing plate for the aluminum drum is different than the one for the iron drum.

Anyone here done this? Also, does anyone know if the 92-95 Civics have the same diameter drums as the 84-87/88-91?

1g HF aluminum drums will work on 88-91 civic/crx's (with drums). its funny, the HF drums dont work on other 1g CRX's tho, because of the backing plate issue, but they fit the 88-91 fine. the later civics 92+ have larger drums.

i dont know how heavy stock ones are, but the HF drums i got are less than 5lbs each.

Thanks for the info Tyson. Know anyone selling a set of good useable ones for a reasonable price (I'm not as cheap a thawley)? I know I can buy them new from the dealer, but they're almost $100 a pop.

wow are they even avialable from the dealer? hm i guess theyd have to. majestic does list em for $75 each.

Have you really seen them at a dealer? I'd love to know which one. Seriously. The PN has been superseded with the steel drum unit from the 88-91 drums. If a dealer has the genuine article, then they are NOS (new old stock) and you should buy them.

Napaonline has two types for that body (well, 5 types actually), one is shiny in the images (Al.?) for $85, the others look to be the cast iron ($34-48).

Those certainly look like the aluminum drums.

Keith, who has 3 sets of the HF drums, but isn't trying to sell them...

That looks like the real deal. The OEM parts were finished in black, but the fins are unique to that drum. Cooling, baby. That's what I'm talking about.

Not sure about the ultimate weight savings over the steel drums. But the comparison to the total weight of the disc brake set up is the real issue. Formula car guys would step on babies for that kind of savings in unsprung weight.

When I look up the 85-87 CRX HF if still lists the part number for the aluminum drums.

However, upon doing a nationwide parts search there are NO dealers (Majestic included) that show having these in their inventory. Also all the warehouses list them as discontinued. Won't even let me order them.

Looks like you are going to have to go with an aftermarket alternative.

A good friend of mine works at a NAPA warehouse. He said none in stock in the country but the reman manufacture shows the still available.

If he can give the hook up how much would you guys want to spend on confirmed real aluminum remans?

I'd pay 50% or less of the price of new ones for "GOOD" remanufactured ones.

I do not believe these would be legal for IT racing and do not see any value to using these, IMHO.

There would be a slight weight advantage wrt unsprung weight and a slight decrease in rotational inertia but cannot see this being a large performance increase. I also cannot see the aluminum drums lasting or performing as well as cast iron.

its simply a weight issue. the friction lining is still the same iron, the casing which is the bulk of the material is aluminum. its up to you if you care if you want less weight back there.

Setup

The finned aluminum rear drum from the Insight will work and are available. The backing plate is easy to modify by simply pulling off the thin stamped steel ring that is spot welded to the backing plate. The thin guage ring can be removed witha pair of pliers or vise grips. It sounds quite ghetto but it can be done cleanly this way.
