Synchro Rings or Sleeve sets ???
OK, I am in the process of rebuilding a Type R tranny. Now I was told that the 4th gear synchro was in need of replacement and that the tranny has ~40k miles on it and has been to the dragstrip. I figure while I have it apart, I will replace all the synchros, seals and bearings just to be on the safe side. Don't ask, this is how I am.
The gears themselves look OK, as do all the other synchros. I am getting my friend to give me a second opinion.
What is the difference between a synchro ring, and a sleeve set?? Other than a whole lot more parts. Do I really need to get a sleeve set, or just some individual syncro rings?? I notice that some of the grey looking rings in the sleeve have the same teeth that the synchro rings have. They show little to no wear.
Thanks,
Ken

the sleeve is the entire syncro assembly inside the sleeve that the shift fork goes around. the syncros are just the parts that would go inside the sleeve.

So when people get "new synchros", do you think that they are getting just the brass synchro rings replaced or new sleeve sets?

depends on the shop doing the work. since most shops are cheapasses, probably just syncros. sleeves shouldnt be damaged from wear, only the syncros.

Great, I'll be doing the work and I am not a cheapass. But even I find it wasteful to replace ~$500 worth of sleeve sets if I only need to replace the rings.
Thanks.
