Gotcha. It's def a nice place; though the pics posted in this thread I've never seen before when I was there. I was in the "town" or whatever by biltmore.
I'm all for relaxed! I like fishing, hiking, camping etc.. sounds like my type of place. I'm just worried about finding work and a school for IT and medical assisting. All the schools around there are damn liberal arts.

Asheville is very scenic. It's a great place to live... if you like being surrounded by uneducated hicks. Seriously, they think books are only used for starting bonfires.

Asheville is gorgeous! Lots of friendly hippy stoner people, mountain roads, and underground music.

Also, Charlotte is not too far away and is a large, very clean city, with a great airport.

The fiancÚ's grandparents have a bunch of land on the side of a mountain in Asheville. Someday, when they can no longer take care of it, I hope to buy it!

You also live in a dumb city. F***ers paving the GD road, making it worse til it's fixed, when it was perfectly fine.

Thanks for the input guys. So what I take of the situation so far is it's a beautiful place to live, and nobody knows much about educational or employment information

So true. Its a weird mixture of new age, tree hugging middle age hippies, college students and redneck, NC good ole' boys. You had better be ready for a much slower rural pace to life. I place it on my "great places to visit but wouldn't want to live there" list.

All of that said, living in NC is not the best, but it is pretty damn good.

My cousin and his fiance are living there. They are both pharmacists so I don't think the cost of living really affects them. Only been there once but it seemed like a pretty nice place. Going back in September for their wedding.

I'm originally from Brooklyn, NY but I grew up mostly in Asheville, 17-18 years and my parents still live there. Personally, it's a shitty place to live now. It's VERY hard to find jobs around town and has been that way the past 10 years. My parents are government employees with Buncombe county.

Colleges:
AB Tech
UNC-Asheville
Warren Wilson-Swannanoa
Blue Ridge-Hendersonville
Haywood Tech-Haywood County
WCU

MANYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY years ago we use to go cruising on Patton Ave. in West Asheville every Friday and Saturday night from 9:30pm to 5am. I actually met my husband cruising. Shortly after I moved to Florida in '03 Patton was shut down by the cops because of the bible thumpers, rednecks, messicans, and teenagers turned the place into a free for all. Car shows are far and few between. WCH usually has lots of meets for the local car scene. The closest Drag tracks are in Bristol,TN and Greer,SC. I don't know much of the autox scene there because I'm not into it.

East Asheville-Oteen-Swannanoa-Black Mountain range from rural to high class
South Asheville-Biltmore is more of the Ritzy area.
West Asheville-Candler-Canton-Lesister is more of the lower to middle class with lots of affordable homes
North Asheville-Weaverville-Woodfin-Barnardsville-Marshall-Mars Hill is pretty rural

Asheville is a tourist town. They pour all of the money into advertising what a great place it is. The last weekend of July is Bele Chere. It's a huge festivial of crap.

Like many have said, LOTS of Hippies and Lesbians.

There is local classifieds through the Iwanna and Asheville Citizen-Times. Iwanna is like a Craigslist only for the Western NC area. They have their own website.

Biltmore mall is a dump and always has been. The Asheville mall is semi-decent.

Asheville City cops are ********. You can be the hottest chick in the world flashing her **** to them and they will still slap you with 10 tickets.

Buncombe County Deputies are pretty laid back and cool.

If you hear of a place called Pisgah View or Deaver View... that's the ghettos of the area. Certain places around Asheville High School and AB Tech are semi ghettoish.

Hendersonville is Asheville's spooge. The state troopers in the area don't **** around.

Knoxville is an hour and a half away along with Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. I personally enjoy traveling there. It's a tourist trap there as well, but at least it's not limited to only select things like Asheville offers.

Greenville, Spartanburg area is very nice in certain places and I personally wouldln't mind living in the areas.

This is all I can think of right now OP. Hope it helps. If you want specifics I can make a quick phone call to my mom and shoot ya a pm.

Wow thanks for the elaboration! I'm thinking I may have to go with charlotte or something. There aren't any IT related schools anywhere near asheville and I hear jobs are hard to find.

Trust me I plan to. This will only be temporary until I finish some business down there.

Really? Why is this? I was thinking I may have to do charlotte instead due to them having jobs and colleges...

Don't move on the East side like I did. FAIL.

I can't walk from the exit at Wal-Mart to my cat w/o getting hustled for money by no less than three people before I get my **** in the truck.

Also, I haven't been to many places outside the city as I have been so buried with work. I work for a HUGE bank there and I'm on an IT encryption team so I've been too busy to leave the city.

I have been out to the Epicenter a few times and had fun.

There are a lot of colleges here though.
