Default Ferrea 5000 valves

Question for the guys running 700-800hp have anyone ever used ferrea 5000 series valves without any issues ?.Dropped a valve last year using a different brand so i ordered a set of ferrea but mistakenly ordered the 5000 series instead of the 6000, so i was wondering if i can use them without issues.car is mostly driven on weekends.

I'm not going to tell you it won't work, because I know guys that have made 1000 on those. Compared to a 6000, you are fine. The extra weight will be hard on it when it gets hot. If I was you I'd get a Competition Plus...here are some things to consider

Competition Plus valve is a hybrid alloy that has a lot of memory, and is designed for high heat turbo applications. Your power level is on the low end of where I would require my customers to get a Comp Plus, but there is still a lot of heat associated with 800hp. What happens is the exhaust valves start to distort and bend with heat, and it doesn't take long. It can happen when guys are popping flames out of their up pipes on the 2 step before they ever make a pass down the track. A normal valve will distort and bend, and then stay bent after it cools. You lose power from leak, then they either fail from being strained or they catch on another valve and all hell breaks loose. A Comp Plus has memory, so the valve will still distort with a lot of heat, but then as it cools it will return to its original shape (or close to it). Heads at extreme hp levels last a LOT longer.

The Ferrea 6000 is a stronger valve, but it can't handle the big heat. For an all motor application its perfect. You can turn high rpm, you can really beat them up, but I don't really use them over 500hp....maybe 600. When they distort and cool, they will stay distorted.

The 5000 was in response to the big competitor coming out with a cheap *** line of valves. Ferrea had to have something to compete. So rather than make a junk valve they took some machining processes out of the 6000 to save money. Hence the non back cut and flat face. Valve companies like selling flat face valves because they are cheaper to produce, and everyone thinks they need them for compression. Ferrea is the only one that gives you the same quality valve, but gives you a price break for less machine processes. I don't run flat in anything...they are 5-7 grams heavier which is hard on springs (especially the cheap ****) and the compression gained is insignificant. My $.02

You are getting into hp levels where controlling exhaust heat will determine the longevity of your engine and how well it performs. We even have a more advanced material that takes an additional 800 deg temp beyond a comp plus, but they have been 3x the price. I have hundreds now and got them down to $35 each. Most SFWD over 1200hp don't run it, but those that do get double the life. Hope that helps.

thank you very much 4piston for that bit of info, but at the time i could not have afforded the competition plus valves cause i had just dropped a valve and wanted to get the motor back as quick as possible. So i thought i could get by with the 5000 series. thanks again

Just a note on the strength of the Comp Plus valves. Recently I had a cam gear slip at 7K on the dyno, and all of my valves hit. I can see discoloration where they touched, and some minor abrasion on two valves, but they all stayed in place and did not cause catastrophic failure in my engine. This is on an engine with the pistons sticking out of the block .020, and Pro1 cams.

Something to consider....Its around $83 a side and you could just do the exhaust side. Bending or dropping a valve can cost thousands.

"Dropping a valve" is a very loose term that's thrown around a lot. Valves don't just drop. Most of the time you can attribute it to installation error, keepers not fitting properly, spring fatigue from not controlling the valve, valve to valve, or piston to valve contact. If everything is locked in and moving properly, they aren't going anywhere. I would try to look harder at why you had a valve issue. Maybe just floated that thing and had contact.

best of luck
