I usually fill up at UDF (Mobil gas). We have a Sunoco on the corner too with 94 octane but all my cars take 87 at the moment. Once I turbo the Miata I'll have it tuned on 94 doe.

from what i understand the additives are nothing more than some higher chain hydrocarbons and detergents. you can make your own and dump it into the cheapest gas you find. i put acetone into tanks from time to time to clean the cats.

Chevron and Texaco are the best in my area(NW).

My old turbo'd coupe would detonate on anything other than the two mentioned above. Granted this was in 99-00' when we didn't really know what engine management was, but it still speaks volumes for the quality of gasoline in the two.

*edit

Jealous of those that have anything higher than 92 at your pumps

uh, no, actually it can

certain cars have fuel level sending units that are sensitive to sulfur levels in the gas. it's not uncommon to see fuel gauge problems in a car that runs on BP go away if the car is switched to chevron and giving a healthy 40oz shot of techron

i've been using costco gas when it is convenient for me because it ends up being significantly cheaper than tier 1 companies (25-30 cent difference) and still cheaper than Arco by about 12-15 cents per gallon once cash back rewards are factored in from credit card and you can't use CC at Arco.

80k miles on my 06 rsx-s and i sitll get 30.5 mpg when driving highway and 25 mpg for mixed driving.

I save about $3.75 per fill-up when compared to tier 1 companies and I fill up about once per week, so thats $195 per year. bamanotbad:

BP has a gas station? You must not be from around here...

I use Chevron 91 in the weekend car and Costco 87 in the daily.

The gas all comes from the same place.
What the various companies add to it is what makes it different.

Top Tier simply means that the company adds more detergents than what EPA requires.

Most every place mixes ethanol in their fuel now.
ARCO, cheap gas, states that their gas reduces fuel economy by 2~4%.

"Gas" is gas, but the crap they put in it makes them different.
I stopped using ARCO many moons ago when I got stranded after a rubber fuel line got eaten through.
Experimented with the more expensive brands and noticed smoother and more powerful running engine.

That's not exactly true. Chevron, Shell, 76, etc all come from the same place. Cheapo mom and pop stations do NOT get it from the same refineries.

I question Costco as well.

in CA, our summer blend only comes from refineries in CA because we're the only state that requires a cleaner burning blend during the summer months, so there is some merit when people say our gas comes from the same refineries.

Arco is not as good a fuel. A large share of the low mileage catalytic converter and o2 sensor failures I see are in Arco gas cars. "where do you get your gas" is a question I've been asking for a long time and a lot of runability issues can be traced back to cheap fuel.

I've worked for two Japanese manufacturers for the past 11 years and both of them have idle issues with Costco fuel.

We've recently been seeing some problems with ethanol content in their fuel being a little higher than it should be as well.

wrong again

do any of you guys actually know what goes into refining gasoline?

long story short the big difference that matters is sulfur content.

there are more than a couple reasons low sulfur gas is better to run

it's also one HELL of a lot harder to refine oil sands than it is saudi light sweet

So what'd better BP with Invigorate or Shell Vpower? Talking premium 93 here.

Shell by a landslide. Shell is top tier and BP is not. I ran BP for 10 years straight until I found out about top tier. I will now only fill up with Shell 93 vpower. I can't notice a difference, but it gives me peace of mind.

this

read up on the top tier gas site and it explains what the few cents per gallon extra buy you

some vehicles also are more sensitive than others. my z06 for example has the worlds worst fuel sending unit. if you don't run top tier the sulfur content of cheap gas will scale the sending unit

That's because ethanol has less energy per volume than gasoline.

I run a 50/50 blend of E-85 and 93

Yes, I know what goes into gas.
Do you know how it's manufactured?
All comes from the same place at the same time (we are talking TOP TIER).

I use Shell by my house, because it's cheapest. Then I found Chevron by my work, it's cheaper, so I might start using them.

Care to explain this? I know we have multiple refineries here in Washington owned by different companies so I guess I don't get what you are saying.

Depends on state I believe. NY/CT is usually 15% I believe...MA is 10%....Maine, NH, 0%, etc.
