Default D16Z6 Engine Rebuild "Bearing Help Please"

I'm rebuilding a D16Z6 right now and I'm having clearance issues with the number 4 rod bearing. The rod is marked "3" the crank is marked "B" Using the honda bearing guide is says a "3-B" is green. When I use a green bearing, torq it down the 23ft lbs my plasti-gauge reading is .0001 way too tight. Please Advise.

What bearings do I need to get to the proper clearance? I tried yellows and still too tight.

they dont sell in the color code anymore. most of the aftermarket bearings are the green ones.

?? OEM Honda bearings are sold by colors

As for clearance you mean your at .001" and not .0001" correct?

And have you done the measurements using the correct tools or are you just plastiguaging?

Californiadad, try taking those bearings out and giving the backs along with the journal a good clean down. Make sure the bearing is completely dry to. Let me know...

The yellows seem to come out the same .001" I'm wondering if there is a defect in the rod.

Also will the P08 pistons cause any ill effect in the engine VS the P028 pistons?

You could also do it the VW way and if it spins around the crank freely only one time around with a hard toss, the clearance is perfect.

Sounds like you have a problem with the rod or crank if your getting the same clearance with different size bearings. Do you have access to a mic and dial bore gauge?

I do have a Mic but no dial bore gauge. I'm going to take it to the machine shop and have them resize/check the rod. Because all other 3 rods came out at .015" clearance

You could just polish that one journal. That should give you round about what you need. Have you definatly ruled out what i first said ? x2 different sized bearings should give you a different reading of around .0002.

P08 pistons will drop the compression ratio down from 9.14:1 to 8.26:1 great if you want to boost, not so great if you don't. I'd find the right pistons or a set of P2E D16Y7 pistons (they'll up the compression slightly to 9.62:1)

Then id at least check the crank journal for that rod with the mic and at least make sure thats in spec and not out of round. Just be careful about having resizing done first unless the rod is out of round because it seems there might be another issue if different bearings are giving you the same clearance

the piston should have nothing to do with rod bearing clearances. try another rod cap on that rod and see if the clearance changes...

It was the rod, for some reason it was too tight. So the machine shop re-conditioned the rod back to factory spec. All good now. So using the p08 pistons in this D16Z6, will it be something a normal driver would notice? I'm building this for a customer that is all stock. he just wants something that will last. He is not a racer so think he will be able to notice any difference?

Hmmmm personally i'd go for the higher compression option. If he does a lot of driving having a higher C/R will improve gas/petrol milage.

It's going to be gutless with those pistons in it. You can probably find a good used set of P2E or stock pistons for next to nothing.

I have another D16Z6 in my garage that i'm going to pull the rods and pistons out of it (p28) and use the rings and bearings off the P08 pistons. Ill have to re-plasti-gauge everything over again to make sure those rods don't interfere with a different crank.

I'm pretty sure the rings are different. Same diameter, but I different thickness I believe.
