lol, it's 2 weeks notice, not 2 years. It's highly unlikely in this case that there was some eager candidate already lined up when he gave his notice. Most likely, the manager was salty that he actually had to do some work to find a replacement, and took it out on the OP.

It's a bad employment practice. Period. How can you expect your employees to respect you enough to give advance notice of quitting, if they know you're just going to **** on them like this? As a manager, wouldn't you much rather have to pay someone as they finish their term of employment, than to all of a sudden be a man down with zero notice, and have to scramble?

If 2 weeks notice wasn't completely SOP, you'd have a point, but you're basically suggesting that if you don't want this to happen to you, you're best off not letting anyone know, and simply not showing up.

No foul, play ball. They probably found 50 candidates that are willing to work for 2/3 your pay.

youre lucky, in my line of work, when you put in your 2 week notice, they walk you out of the building that same day and thats it....

At my last job I gave 3 weeks notice so I would have enough time to crosstrain a few people (fly people out etc...). If the employee wasn't liked or there was a security risk, the person is walked out the door immediately.

It's a 2 week notice courtesy, not a guarantee they'll keep you the entire two weeks. Also, if they let you go immediately you aren't guaranteed the two weeks pay either. It's entirely up to the company you work for.

Also, CA is an "at will" employment state. This means you can leave anytime you like and they can let you go anytime they like. It however is common practice from the employee side to still give 2 weeks notice. And no, you can't collect UE for the week and a half you didn't have a job. You quit, you weren't let go. To add, if they decide to let you go early they have to cut you a check on the spot for all wages and PTO you have accumulated (legally they might have a couple of days, however all companies i've worked at cut the check on the spot).

i never ever would give 2 weeks. when's the last time you heard of an employer giving you two weeks when they fire you? the two weeks notice is kind of a scam employers have trained people with in order to make THEIR life easier, not yours.

i vote to tell them the exact day you want to quit. if they get pissy just ask when was the last time they gave someone notice they let go. usually quiets the bitching

what's with the escort out of the building bullshit when you quit , I don't get it?

Personally I would do a no call no show, employers care about their earnings not the people, I @ people who go above and beyond to satisfy their master.

This.

I can guarantee all of the employees noticed that he got fired after giving his notice. You think any of the current employees will give 2 weeks notice when they quit?

It's a small world and pulling **** like that will get you a reputation. Some of us can see beyond the end of our noses and know that a short term "**** you" isn't worth ruining future prospects. For reference, I have connections at a lot of large companies in the area and I use those connections when a candidate is coming from a company they work for.

Plus, if you are working in anything remotely difficult 2 weeks isn't long enough to fill a position. We've had 2 spots open in our department since January.

If you're working at McDonald's? You can get away with that kind of stuff. Working in a professional environment? Please do it so you disqualify yourself from being a candidate in any jobs I'm applying for.

Sucks you lost out on the pay but at least you have a week off to chill and get situated in your new pad.

Also your going to hate your drive. My friend lives in Costa Mesa and drives to Beverly Hills everyday. He just went and bought a motorcycle a couple weeks ago to save time.
