Look on the cylinder head under the Distributor, you will see a sensor going into the head, its a 1-wire. This sensor gives feedback to the temp gauge on your gauge cluster. I have seen the connectors break off the sensor where it hooks on.

in my experience that temp sender under the distro can become cooked and brittle from the motor heating up over time and break off quite easily.

Also check the coolant level in both the radiator and reservoir.

Coolant level is good in both...looks like the gauge so I'm looking now for a new cluster, maybe one with tach.

thanks for the suggestions!

Ok...

replaced my cluster with another from an LX and still have the same "no temp gauge" issue...

I have checked the #15 - 10 amp fuse, replaced the sending unit and now the cluster with the same result...actually looks like the temp needle drops when the key is on.

any more ideas?

TIA

Did you ever do any of the tests in the posted diagram. Guessing solutions at random can get very expensive.

I did the testing, thats why I replaced the sending unit first...when that didn't work I replaced the cluster (wanted a tach anyway)

What was the result of the Sending Unit Test and Gauge Test prior to replacing either component versus now. I presume that your test results then and now do not fit with either being the problem. Instead, it sounds like a bad wire or connector between the sending unit and cluster.

grounding the sending unit wire resulted in no movement of the gauge when ignition switched on

impedence reading of unit itself was off a little but no it didn't indicate as being bad but I replaced it anyway...

I visually inspected the wire as far as possible without tearing into the harness and didn't see any break

Very good, but I think you mean resistance here.

Very good.

Here's where you went wrong and didn't follow the instructions in the diagram. You usually can't tell visually whether a wire is bad. You need to use your multimeter to test for lack of continuity between the ends at the sending unit and cluster.

Got it working, turned out to be a bad connector on the wire that plugs into the sensor
