07 Civic Hybrid Oil Change

2007 Hybrid Oil Change Instructions on how to change oil in a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid. I belive it is the same for 2006. Materials Needed Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W20 3 Quarts Honda Oil Filter (Napa Gold Filter #1334, or whatever other choice filter you fancy) Some shop rags (Paper Towel will suffice) Funnel (unless you like oil all over your valve cover) Oil Drain Pan Jack + Jackstands 21+ only please Tools Needed 10mm socket + rachet Small Flathead (-)Screw Driver (Size 1) Oil filter wrench 17mm socket or combo wrench Begin Here Make sure the car is on a flat, solid surface. Make sure the E brake is engaged. You may also chaulk the tires for extra insurance. This can be done with a few pieces of 2x4 wood. Jack the car up and place jackstands under. Safety first! You will find a large plastic panel underneath the car. You will need the small screwdriver and the 10mm wrench. Remove the plastic cover in the picture below. Circled in blue are the Retaining Clips, Circled in red are the 10mm blots. Remove them Here are the fasteners after they have been removed To remove the Retaining Clips, gently pry the inner tab downwards. When it becomes loose, pull it out with your fingers. If you break these, you will need to replace them $$ around $5 each! The panel is tucked under the front wind dam, so you will need to pry it out gently. Swing the panel down. The rear of the panel is made to hinge like a door, do not break it or you will need to replace it. Underneath you will see the Oil Filter and Oil Drain Plug MAKE CERTAIN that you undo the drain plug that is labled "ENGINE OIL" Honda CVTFluid is $$$$$, we dont want to drain the wrong fluid here. Place an oil drain pan under the vehicle. With the 17mm wrench, undo the Oil Drain Bolt. Wipe the Drain Bolt clean of all dirt and debris before reinstalling. Always change the crush washer to insure longevity of your oil pan. Reinstall the drain bolt with the new crush washer. Wipe the excess clean. Remove the oil filter with the oil filter wrench. If you do not have an oil filter wrench, and you must get the oil filter off, it is HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED, but you must, hammer a screwdriver thru the old oil filter, and use it as a lever to loosen. Be sure not to puncture anything behind the filter as the screwdriver may have penetrated all the way thru. This method is usually very messy, but it could get you out of a bind Before installing the new oil filter, lube the large O-ring with some fresh oil. The honda OEM filters come pre lubed. Fill the oil filter half way up with fresh oil. This wil help "prime" the oil pump and insure instant oil pressre. Install the new oil filter and hand tight. Tools are not needed to tighten the filter. Replace all the hardware. Lower the car back to level position. This will allow you to get a proper read for the oil level. Locate the Oil fill hole and the Oil Dip Stick. With the funnel, fill the engine with 3 quarts of fresh oil. Check the dip stick to insure that the level is correct. Add more if needed. Wipe the Oil Cap clean of any dirt or dust. Replace when complete Resetting the Oil Life Indicator After all is complete, clean yourself off wash your hands, and get into your car. Put the key in the ignition and turn it to position 2. Push the selector button untill the dash displays "Oil Life" Press and hold the selection button untill the indicator blinks A1 on the Left (About 10 Seconds). Release the button, and press and hold for another 10 seconds. The indicator shuold reset and read 100%. Take out that cold and enjoy! Special Note New cars shuold have their oil changed after the first at 1500 mi. Here is a picture of my oil after the first oil change at only 1302 miles. As you may know, Zero weight oil is very clear, mine is dark coffee, almost black. This is the material that comes from your engine after a break in. My Dip stick also shows that the oil is dirty Please change your oil and filters often to keep our cars going! You don't fill the oil filter up half way with oil? We do that at Honda. Only for Hybrids.

No offense but you linked me to a thread in which no one agrees with you. 1500 miles is too soon, hell, these days 3000 miles can be too soon for a daily driver.

and if you notice, i am the only one that actually did it and have something to show (dirty oil), everyone else just talks and "theorizes"

i actually do this for a living (test engines/oil viscosity) and have lab results... but of course no one on this forum cares... they just think what they think for each their own.

but everyones comments always welcome, good or bad, at least it gives the rest of us something to think about

Serious, you can drain the oil and remove the filter without moving the drain pan. Plus the oil doesnt go dripping down the side of the motor like in D and B series.

My Honda dealership specifically told me to wait till 5k to do the first oil change. They said the break in oil should be left in for 5k according to Honda.
And, they are also telling me that ALL of my subsequent oil changes are at 5k, which doesn't jive at all with my oil quality indicator.
Anyone elsa have the "official" recommendation for the Hybrids?

well that pretty much sounds offical to me. straight from the dealership

We just go by the Maintenance Minder, which usually ends up right around 5000 miles anyways for each oil change.

Also, I use a set of Mac Tools push pin pliers to quickly remove the push pins without having to fuss or worry about snapping off a side of the head with a screwdriver.

What's not "offical" (actually it's spelled "official", at least here in the NE ) about the tech notes that the dealership gets from Honda America?
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with any of the info here, just thought I'd inject into the thread what Honda's recommendation is.
