OT: world's most powerful internal combustion engine?
Out of sheer, morbid curiosity, I'm looking for the world's most powerful IC engine. Best I can find is the 12-cylinder 2-stroke diesel Sulzer 12RTA96C marine engine:
960mm bore and 2,500mm stroke
89,640 BHP@100 rpm
2,030 tons
Anyone know of anything bigger?

that would be pretty darn cool to have 89,640hp in your car. Seriously though, I'll peak around on the internet but have NO idea what could come close to that.

Oh you don't have to look around. I just wanted to post up that behemoth. You know, like Tim Allen says: "POWER ARRRRRRR."
I'm trying to calculate the displacement and torque, but am getting dyslexic trying to place the decimal point.

my best shot was 235,000L for displacement. hp/L is at a meager 2.63, with my crude (and probably incorrect) calculations.

Hyundai makes bigger marine engines than that - for supertankers.....I will try to find a pic.....

hmmmm I'm getting 21,714 liters and I think Hyundai uses Sulzer engines for their supertankers.

I got the same thing, 21,714 Liters.
Pi * 48^2 * 250 = Volume in CCs
/1000 = Liters * 12 cylinders = Displacement in Liters
Thats great and all, but it doesn't have VTEC.

I got 1,325,103.639 ci. which is 21715.89 liters.
I also guessed at a torque calculation and I got 4707892.8lb-ft

whoops...I guess I would get that if I can't even read the specs right in front of me. For some asanine reason, I used 50 for the radius!

torque, not HP, is the key to that beast.
?
Wanna drop that in you beater for a sleeper hybrid?

This looks like the site to go for some basics.
They most powerful they have is a Diesel engine for electric power generation. It is rated at 80MW. That translates to 108,811 HP.

In a Danny DeVito voice: "4 million ft-lbs, 4 mmmmmillion ft-lbs, 4 mmmmmmmmillion ft-lbs" , or something like that...
hehe those engines dont count. How bout something that fits into a 4-wheeled vehicle that weighs less than say, 5 tons? TopFuel engines would have to be at at the top of the list. What are they pushing these days 7-8,000hp?

They are anywhere from 6000 to 8000HP depending on who you ask.
In a 4-wheel vehicle huh?
10,000HP
45,200HP
100,000HP - 75Mw

the first one is all good, but I don't think jet engines qualify as internal combustion, or do they?

nah, Jet engines don't qualify as internal combustion. Unless you happen to be standing too close to the intake side when it goes full throttle, ehehe

It depends on what you are using to define an IC engine. A jet engine has a combustion chamber but lacks pistons and other reciprocating parts.

Re: OT: world's most powerful internal combustion engine? (Cobra)
Has anyone seen that Integra drag car in maybe Super Street or Import Tuner this month?
4-cylinders, 4.8 liters, 4000hp created from 55psi boost. LOL, certainly the first 1000hp/cylinder 4-pot I've ever heard of.
Anyone wanna wager how much the engine components on that beast weigh? I wonder if it's piston-port or rotary valve or what... I wonder how many times more those pistons weigh compared to our cars.
Chris, who thinks that's probably the only engine that needs a crane to hoist a piston ring and would hate to be the poor guy in charge of doing a top-end rebuild on that.

Re: OT: world's most powerful internal combustion engine? (Cobra)
Well... the combustion in a jet engine isnt really contained internally by any means, and even less so if you consider an afterburner. The combustion with a piston/rotary engine is wholly contained inside the motor.
