Default how to tell if your starter has gone bad (aside from the obvious...)

So about 2 weeks ago, I had an alarm put on my car with remote start, but when I picked up the car and tried to use the remote starter through out the week I was having trouble getting the car started, the car would start for a second but turn off, so I decided I'd call the security place that installed the system, I went back to them, and the Tech there told me that he could "change the starter timing" that is controlled by the remote starter system it's self. But he told me right as he was doing this, "Some times, doing this puts strain on the starter, (as he started my car) but yours seems fine" Ok, my car ran fine for about 3 days, untill today I was out the door going to work, and I get in my car, and try to start it, but it will not turn over. So I'm guessing it's the starter, I've called the Security place to get this "starter timing" crap fixed My question is, is there a sure shot way to figure out if the problem is due to a dead starter?
thanks for the help

take the starter out and turn on the key, the starter should spring-out and spin.

doing that, if the starter starts to spin it's good right? Sorry for asking, I've never heard of doing that, thanks

I had my starter go out on me, I took it apart and grinded down the points with a dremel tool. Worked Great!
