It must be getting seriously hot for it to glow red. I've never seen one do that before.

you must be running way to lean it will cause the motor to run hotter. i think it is lean . do you have a vaccum leak? basically to much air not enough fuel

i dont think the manifold is supposed to glow red like that. i remember reading in a shop manual one time about this, but i cant remember what causes it.

A glowing red exhaust manifold can be caused by an extreme lean or extreme rich condition. A clogged cat will also do this. But the cat will be clogged because of the extreme rich/lean conditions.

If you have your timing way retarded, combustion will continue through exhaust stroke and continue to burn in the exhaust system often causing an exhaust manifold to get hot enough to "glow". check your timing and your catalytic converter like the other mentioned as this can slow exhaust flow down enough to cause heat saturation. Basicly your car is running in a less than perfect condition right now and I would highly recommend you shoot timing and take a peak down the cat.

Wait before checking all this... What were you doing before you popped the hood and saw your glowing manifold.

In some cases it is normal that it will glow... Ride your engine real hard, i mean real hard for a while and you will see it glow...

Tis true.. was helping a friend pickup 6 Uhaul trucks last night. Dumbass didnt put it in overdrive, just regular drive and was pegged out redline @100km/h w/ a v10, needless to say he used 1/4tank of gas in 10 minutes and both manifolds were BRIGHT ORANGE. They decided to leave the truck there as they were not sure what happened. But I knew it was because his dumbass didnt use O/D. LOL

Old thread, but I think this might be on the lines of what my issue might be.

91 Civic Si D16A6. 122,000 original miles. No CEL's stock intake and exhaust. After driving in town with stop signs for 30 minutes the vehicle starts to get sluggish and uses more fuel then normal. Temp gauge is reading normal but I know if it runs lean or rich it will heat things up and could cause the cat to go bad.

I pulled over and checked things out and engine bay was really hot around manifold/cylinder head. Didn't look under at the cat though.

Sometimes when I step on the brakes the pedal slowly goes to the floor. Which could be vacuum leak but could be master cylinder. I usually pump the brakes once to build the pressure. I hear a whistle sound when I press on the gas as well.

Check the timing belt and the timing is right on. But previous owner said that the belt broke on him and he replaced it. 37.11 mpg on the freeway. Car was sitting for 6 months. Drives really good besides when it heats up like that in town.

Any suggestion on how to make a better diagnose? Thx for your help!!

Unless you're running a turbo or a $1800 Inconel steel header it should NOT glow red LOL.

I agree. But it's still getting hot. Really hot and draining my gas tank.
