Default S3 light Blinking

ok ive heard of this problem be4 in 2nd gen tegs but i wanna make sure i kno what it is.

so my cars a auto and when i drive sometimes the s3 light starts to blink and it seems like my car stays in 3rd gear at all times and then if i turn my car off sometimes it goes away sometimes it doesn't its completely random. i've been told by people its a shift solenoid.

Your thoughts??

and if you know or can estimate how much it will cost to get fixed + labor

thanx

Car's trying to to tell you it failed self diagnostics by S3 blinking.
Read code on ECU.

read the TCM not the ECU. its located under the driverside dash in the back. box with a red light on the bottom of it. basically, with your car parked put it to ii (located before the start position), then quickly looked under your dash and the TCM will flash codes with pauses inbetween.

long flashes = 10s
short flashes = 1s

ie. long, long, short, short, short = 23
short, short, short short = 4

look up the codes in the helms and you're set. most common codes are 1,2,7,8 which are shift and lockup solenoids are going bad. HTH

short flashes one or two times a second isn't going to get you accurate information... you need to watch and pay attention tot he flash sequence.

example: LONG LONG SHORT SHORT SHORT --PAUSE-- LONG LONG SHORT SHORT SHORT --PAUSE--
that would be a Code 23... whatever that is

This was taken from G2IC.com I was under the assumption your car is 91GS ?

ECU Codes.

Depending on which year your Teg is, there are two different ways to check your ECU code.

1990 and 1991 Tegs:
Your ECU is located under the carpet on the passenger side of the car. You have to pull back on the carpet to expose the ECU which is brass in color. There is a circular window on the face of it with red LED in it. This LED will blink and this is where you read your code.
To get the LED to blink, you must turn the car to the "ON" position but do not start it. The LED will blink with fast blinks and with slow blinks. If you have four fast and two slow, that is code 42.

1992 and 1993 Tegs:
Your ECU is located in the same spot as 90-91's but you won't be reading the code off the ECU. For you, you must jump a connector and then your Check Engine light will blink to tell you the code.
The connector you must jump is located under the glove box and should be green in color. How to jump -- Helms: Chapter 11 page 40

ok, what part of blinking s3 light did you not understand. a blinking s3 asks you to check your TCM not ECU, thats what your check engine light is for.

like erik said we really need to know what the codes are then we can tell you what's going wrong. if you're positive its code one or two then it doesn't matter because both codes are for your lock-up control solenoid. they are the upper 2 solenoids on the auto tranny and they both need to be replaced at the same time, besides they come in a kit together. after you replace your lock-up solenoid make sure to take out the Alternator Sensor Fuse (10A) for 10 seconds and then put it back in. this should erase the error codes from your TCM and hopefully no more codes on your next start up.

I stand corrected.
91GSteggy- count the number of blink. It should be in between 1-13, let me know, I'll check the manual.

under the dash against the firewall just above the dead pedal. can't miss it, the flashing LED is almost the size of a dime.
