civic b18c runs great until warmed up.. Bogging like Crazy! Someone come here and help figure out wh
Alright.. This post is for a friend.
Basically at initial startup, whenever the engine is completely cold, it runs like a champ... Probably for about 5-15 minutes. Once the engine warms up, it bogs.. sputters.. misfires... and runs like ****. You pull the plugs after it running shitty and the bitches are ghost white.. indicating its running lean. It really sounds like a fuel problem.. either the injectors or the ecu is bad possibly?
THe car is a 1997 Civic DX
it has a obd1 jdm b18c with p72
polished intake manifold
brand new rotor and cap
new walbro fuel pump
FPR and FPG set at 55
header
new spark plugs

does the ecu look for a knock sensor? is it hooked up? did you try using a stock fuel regulator?

Re: (white99gsr)
Have you ever heard of "heat soak"? It's when hot air is sucked up into the intake and the mian sighn of this is "bogging" when accelerating. I had it all the time with my Contour....just an idea.

Yeah, I have sort of the same problem. Not as bad as you are discribing yours to be, but I am pretty sure mine is a cause of heat soak... I don't know what to do to overcome this, but if anyone has ideas, post them up.

Will heat soak turn your car into a COMPLETE DOG? I have this same problem and I highly doubt that it is heat soak. Heat soak will only kill a few hp, not destroy your power curve.

this sounds like the exact same thing thats happening to my car....93 hatch with OBDI GSR engine....haven't checked my plugs yet, but i've went over the wiring bout 50 times, checked all the sensors, new cap, rotor, plug wires....fuel pressure is set to bout 45psi.....i'm gonna check the plugs and see if a new ECU could help...you may wanna try that.

Yes, This is my friends car.. I believe he told me about you having the same problem as him. We just finally got a video of it, so people can actually see whats going on.
I do not believe its heat soak? If it was, there would be way more similar problems.. We've tried a few diff o2 sensors, checked wiring and a few other things..
We're waiting for a new p72.. my question is.. Can an ecu make your car act crazy like that?

Re: (porsche997)
I don't think you need the Walbro pump. I had problems with mine. Change back to a GSR pump. It may be heat soak but I think you're getting a lil too much fuel.
And how do you know the car is running lean????

Look at spark plug. If it turns white then it's running lean. It should be light brownish.

You are running way rich for 1, and two, sounds like a faulty O2 sensor if that doesn't solve the problem.

Ok guys.. its an obd1 gsr engine.. who cares... lets stay on topic here.. Me and my friend are trying to figure out his problem...
1. Having the fuel set at 55 would NOT cause the problem.
2. Can an ECU go bad?

I had the EXACT same problem with my GSR. Turned out to be an interittant resistance issue in my plug wire. replaced plugwire and it runs fine.

Yes an ECU can go bad, but that is a pretty expensive problem to fix. You are going to be better off checking the less expensive stuff first. It sounds like you guys have tried almost everything. I was going to suggest changing the fuel filter, but I can't remember if you guys already did that or not. If you have checked the entire fuel and emissions system, and found nothing, then I'd start looking at the ECU. I would deffinately drop the fuel pressure back to somewhere around 40psi. A higher fp can affect your mixture in more ways than one. If the psi's are too high they will make it harder for the actuator in the injector to move the pintle, thus at higher RPM's it won't have as much time to open. Therefore you will misfire, bog, and lean out your mixture.
Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure this could possibly be the case. So turning down the fuel pressure might be worth your while.
