what does the map sensor do?
does it have anything to do with the fuel delivery? cuz i'm still geting gas miliage in the high 20s, so i figure some other sensor just be ******* up

It takes a(meaning one) reading of atmospheric pressure when you first turn the key on and it uses that # to determine other settings.... Fuel mixture, blah blah blah....

What do you mean about it taking one reading? What other settings does it determine?

MAP sensor is the #1 most important sensor in the whole car. The entire fuel and timing map depends on a precise reading from the map sensor.
Better? I can't think right now. Its almost 4:30am....

For bad gas milage, i would check your o2 sensor if its fairly old. An old sluggish o2 can cause a decent decrese in gas milage.

To back that up....my MAP sensor just died last night, and the result is that my ecu gives me no spark, or fuel. They car is totally dead. Basically if it doesnt get that reading, then it doesnt run.
The voltage reading across the yellow, and red (from memory...dont quote me) wires is supposed to be 5v. If you dont get a reading "across" them, then put them both on one lead, and put the other lead to a ground. If you still dont get a reading, then you have a faulty MAP sensor.

I lied. The map sensor wont ever shut off your car. Your timing belt shearing off some teeth, and then skipping on the otherhand...will. Back to the drawing board

I unplugged my MAP sensor the other night while my car was running and it shut off....

Before you go jumping all over your MAP sensor, when is the last time you did a full tune up? Is your air filter clean? it should be replaced every 12K (along with your pcv) or cleaned if you have a K&N style gauze filter. How bout the fuel filter? It needs replacing every 12k as well. Don't forget the cap, rotor, and correctly gapped spark plugs, I always check the gap on new plugs which are supposedly pre-gapped you never know if they were dropped, squished, etc.... Also don't neglect the O2 sensor it has considerable impact on fuel economy. Do the easy stuff first as it is likely needed, then if you still have problems grab a digital multi meter and a helms and look into the less likely culprits. HTH

Uuuuum, no. The MAP sensor will kill the car. Mine went out about 1 month ago while driving & the car kept stalling out & it gave me teh MAP code. I could not keep the car running no matter what I tried until I put in another MAP sensor.
